Turbo, High Performance Engine Rebuild Kit, or Nit
Sunday, January 01, 2006 4:59 PM
Ok. Iam stuck on the next thing I wont to proceed on doing to my 1995 Cavalier 2.2L. I wont to have at least 180 to 205 hp gain from one of these mods. turbocharger, high performance engine kit, or nitrous. My car has 121,000 miles on it, but all of those miles are inner city miles. Iam trying to gain some safe hp that wont damage my motor to bad. Iam trying to figure which one is safer to go with and which one will give me the power Iam looking for . Now, i really wouldn't mind doing just all motor, and gaining that much power, but I no that is very hard to do that with a j-body. So if Iam going to have to go turbo, 1st is it wise to go turbo do to the miles on the car, 2nd can any boy send me some links where expensive turbo acc. and turbos are sold, cause I will build my own custom turbo kit. But just looking for some suggesting.

Thanks

Well if you go if you go the route of nitrous or boost, you're putting more wear on your bottom end (pistons & rods mainly). All motor would be your "safest" as far as less likely of breaking down if you have parts installed properly.

Now this is not saying that you won't be safe with boost or nitrous...it's how you are setup. If you are setup properly and maintain your vehicle properly, then you should be fine. You're best bet is to go turbo if you want to reach 200 whp easier. The LN2s don't do too well on a stock block with high shots of nitrous (75+), so I doubt you will meet your goal that way. All motor...well...depends on how you build your motor and how much compression you decide to run. Read these 2 threads on the situations on building an N/A 2.2 OHV and on starting an OHV build guide:

121,000 is a good amount of mileage but it still comes down to how well you have taken care of the car before hand. If you have taken good care of it, then you can take a risk of going turbo. Even then, it depends on how much boost you plan on running. There is much more involved than saying "I'll run X psi".

There are some places and tips I can give you but I don't want to go too in depth because this is the Performance Forum. Turbo subjects are deemed to be talked about in the "Boost Forum". You can post/search in that forum or you can contact me privately and I'll help you out as much as I can.

Damn...I overlooked that. In that case...I don't know what to tell you bro, either do a motor swap or do an fuel system swap (which takes some work but can be done) from an 2200. Fuel is a major factor when it comes to boost...your side feed injectors are not supported aftermarket wise and there aren't really any vehicles you can take them from either. The 2200s use top feed injectors.

If you are investing in a rebuild, you might as well pick up a complete 2200 and sell what you can in order to cover the costs for the 2200. You'll have basically almost 2 full motors to get rid of once you finish the rebuild, if you do it right.

at that many miles I wouldn't throw all that money in there. Think about it how long can it still last ? You don't want to spend a few grands and then the car falls apart in 2 years.

Engine swap or save up for a new car.

121 000miles is nothing. Why people alwways say "with that much mileage, I wouldn't do anything to the car"? 121000 miles is nothing. If the engine run good why not? Engines are cheap compared to another car. Let the guy do what he wants with his car and just guide him. my friend Z24 had 220 000miles when he put the turbo on it and he didn't had any problem. We don't drive Renault 5 car, we drive cars that can make alot of miles.
