first, the 2200 is not the LD9. the 2200 is the 98-02 2.2 OHV. The LD9 is the 2.4 DOHC, and as far as mods and mileage are concerned, the LD9 is the best way to go. Most out of box power. There is no automatic 5 spd, you got 5 spd manual or 4 spd auto. Cost of parts is about the same for all the motors really, until you get into heavy builds and what not.

I <3 The HO. It's an awesome motor, truly well done. But they have @!#$ty head gaskets and water pumps.

no problem with the water pump on the 2.3. Once you put a Fel-pro head gasket you don't have any problem.

2.3 Ho

To awnser your question(or at least try):

show: looks are completely dependant upon people's tastes, but I think the 2.4/quad looks best, especially when the idi cover is painted and/or polished

Bolt ons: Definately, without a question, the 2.3 HO. But, out of what you are asking, I would have to say a tie between the eco and 2.4, with neither being particularly good.

easiest to work on: 2200. Pushrod motors are hella easy to work on.

cost: depends on your area; around here, the 2200 because it's overly common.

cost of parts: 2.4, only because you can swap 2.3 parts into it

Gas mileage: On paper, the eco should be best; however, my 2.4 has gotten 40 mpg highway, averages around 35 highway, and averages around 32 combined(Stock except for intake)

Show after market: I don't know, neither?

5spd transmission: good luck with that. 5spd on any GM 4 cylinder car means clutch and gears.

Anyone feel free to correct me where you see fit!

he means the 80 somthing to 97 2.2 ohv not the 2200 as far as puch rods...

ill start by saying i have a 2.4 and think its an awesome enigne

probably the best bet would be a eco motor..good porwer to start with and its gm's new motor that there backing pretty well with good parts

price wise im sure you could find a 2.4 cheaper then an ecotec because of how long they've been around .

to start with a 2.4 and eco are pretty darn close as far as power is concerned..please dont ask which is faster.. i see the eco as a little bit of a more forgiving engine if you beat on it and theres going to be new parts for them for quite awhile

2.2 or 2200, working on it is the same

If you're going to be swapping, like was said before, go for a 2.4 eco or 2.0S/C.
