Head and cam question
Monday, November 14, 2005 5:46 PM
I was planning on doing a head and cam swap on my 99 sunfire 2200, I was wondering where I can buy a good fully built head, and a good cam for N/A, also I was wondering what other parts I would have to replace i.e. pushrods, lifters, rocker arms, fuel system, etc.? Anybody has any good advice it would greatly be appreciated. I plan on doing this within a month or so or waiting till the new year and buying piston heads and connecting rods and doing a fully built motor, let me know what you guys think?

Thanks alot,
Brett

There really isn't any companies that sell a complete head for the 2200s but you can find the parts you want. Patriot Performance sells a Ported and Polished head for $550 bare (comes back with OEM parts but if you leave it bare it saves time for when you want to upgrade the parts with aftermarket parts). For more info on this head, go here:
2200 Patriot Heads

As far as the Pushrods, Lifters, Rocker Arms...go to Jbody Performance for all those parts.

As far as needing to upgrade those parts, you don't need to, especially fuel system. If you're N/A and just upgrading those parts, you don't need to upgrade anything as far as injectors or fuel pump BUT if you want to make sure you aren't running Rich (doubt you would run lean), take your car to a dyno tuning shop and see what you're running and what your Air/Fuel Ratio is.

Go with Wiseco or JE Pistons and Eagle Rods...can't go wrong with those. Also look into upgrading your crank for a forged one. I believe Jbody Performance sells a Crank setup that comes balanced, look into that.

Good luck with your setup.

You can have your head PnP'd, and buy all the valvetrain stuff from JBP except for rockers and pushrods, I'd get those from Howell Automotive.

What about the head that mantapart sells, www.mantapart.com is this thing any good, I mean $850.00 seems like a pretty decent deal, it comes with HD valve springs and stainless steel valves, let me know what you guys think?

If you want to buy a "race" head, then buy from Patriot. If you saw Mantapart's report with the BBB, you would never even go to their site again. I'll give you positive advice right now. Don't ever buy from Mantapart.

Worse company to deal with...do not order anything from them.

Thanks for the advice I appreciate it, Do you guys think 200 whp is attainable on an all motor setup if I do a full race head, stage 2 cam, all high perf valvetrain parts and 10.1 comp pistons w/eagle rods and a forged crank? ( mods I already have inclue header, full exhaust, CAI, underdrive pullies ) If I go all out with the motor I am going to do MSD ignition and fuel system mods too, but 200fwhp is my goal.

Honestly I doubt it. If you're talking about having an OHV motor that probably dynos under 100 whp to having 200 whp on an all motor setup...that's 100 whp gain (or more)...I say if you want 200 whp, you better go for forced induction.

Also, even if you got 200 whp on an all motor setup, your motor would be probably be a high maintenance motor.
