Exhaust Too Loud?
Friday, October 21, 2005 11:08 PM
Well Last night a cop pulled me over for my license plate light not working, haha pretty simple right?

Well he explained to me how he was part of this group called DRAGNET which apparently is an anti street racing group/anti illegal modifications group.

Apparently he went on about how my exhaust was illegal because it was too loud.

Apparently 95 Decibles is the limit, which I don't think my exhaust is even close too.

First question now,

Can someone give me some idea as to what 95 Decibles sounds like? Compared to something like airplane or loud music etc etc?

And second, I'm gonna go get it tested to see if it is too loud, in the event that it is, what can I do to lower the decible level down?

Thanks a lot guys,
Personally I don't think it's too loud, but I still have to go get the test taken.

those are pretty weak tickets, i think if you go to court they arent that hard to get dropped

As long as you have resonators, you should be fine. If they give you a ticket anyways, than just fight it...you can't get around it.

I do have a glasspack. The guy gave me the 1800 of a testing center. here in town.

Chad K (fast eco) seems to think that I'm not gonna be able to get it passed so I'm kinda worried he is the resident expert on most of the cali laws but I'm still gonna try. I'm giving the center a visit tomorrow.

Any other advice guys? what should I say when I try to fight this? what proof do I have that it's not too loud etc etc. how do I fight this?

Well the center should give you an accurate read out. If you pass and a cop pulls you over and says your exhaust is too loud, you can show that slip in court.

that cop must be busy as @!#$ pulling over damned near every motorcycle on the road, might be a stock harley but 95db is the law is the law. i know things don't happen like that for real but it should be one law for all, is th 95 db at idle or WOT or is the law there non specific?

good luck man

I didn't pay attention to how much he said the Decible is read at but I think... some percent of when the car achieves maximum horsepower. something like that.

yeah I'm not all that worried. I'll figure something out.

I'm not sure what state you're in, but I'm in Iowa. I got pulled over a while back (for speeding). He also wrote me a ticket for the same thing, and I fought it in court and got out of it. The laws here don't specify the dB levels, but they do state that the exhaust must have a muffler. The judge had an officer inspect my car for a muffler, which I had, and then dropped the charge. The only thing I can think of is if you were violating a noise ordinance at the time you were stopped, but other than that it's pretty weak.

I believe motorcycles follow different regulations or don't have any regulations about loudness because some of them don't even have any mufflers.

the reason motorcycles are loud is for safety. so people in cars can hear them

RadioShack sells dB meters. Go buy one and when you get pulled over for it again whip the sumbitch out and prove to him it is under 95 dB, if it is, of course.

Some cops just have nothing better to do. My friend got pulled over while I was in his car for "illegal revving of engine". Explain that one to me, lol. The ticket got dropped faster then you can say wow. lol

Thats such bull@!#$. I bet i could get out of a "hot roding" ticket. So what would they do if there is a Z06, or Viper, Evo, etc that are all stick? You hear those cars rev up before going constantly cause of their power output. Some cops just have nothing better to do.

my exhaust is very loud....and I have never gotten a ticket or pulled over because it was too loud. The only time I was pulled over was because the cop heard my "over accelerate" about a half a mile away. I saw him, he saw me...flashed his lights and pulled me over.... he didn't clock me but wrote me 3 tickets for; suspended drivers licence, no insurance, and suspended registration. If I had only only kept my heavy foot off the gas so hard...I would have gotten away with it.
He ended up taking my licence plate and leave me for a 30 mile hike home. that was over a year ago...

to give you an idea 126 db from exhuast would be about what a 383 stroker V-8 with headers, and 3" straight piped ending under the bed of the truck and its LOUD as @!#$ no way your 4 cyl is hitting close to 90 db

The one, the only, ME.

I have a stock header (really gotta get rid of it >.>

2.25 Inch piping with a high flow cat and a 25 inch Thrush glasspack. and a muffler.
