CAI in Winter
Tuesday, October 18, 2005 8:19 PM
I am looking for some input. I have an AEM Cold Air Intake for my 04 2.2eco 5spd Cavalier. Most people I have talked to said it's allright to leave it on over the winter, which I did last year, but I'm still thinking I might take it off. It gets very loud in the cold which i don't really mind, but i want to make sure it's not bad.
It seems to take a long time to warm up, which may be normal.
But in the extreme cold the engine won't warm up to normal temp, whixh means very little heat inside
It does get below 30 degrees here in Jan & Feb.
It also seemed to burn way too much gas

any suggestion??? thanks

If you dont want to run it in the winter then just put the stock intake back in.

it's not that I want to put the stock one back in. I just want to know if there are downsides to running a CAI in the winter.

And I do have a bypass valve.

I removed mine for the winter, I don't want the filter to be blocked by the snow... I can't put my stock setup in cause the box don't fit with my strut bar, and the bar isn't going anywhere.

I periodically checked last winter,a nd ther was a little snow that came in from around the fog light, but never enough that it worried me.

and on a side note, anyone with an intake, where did you relocate the clutch fluid bottle that was mounted on the stock part?

on my last cavalier with the 2200, i mounted my clutch fluid in the back right underneith the hood with two screws

you can get a bracket like that :

or do it yourself, it would be probably less than 20$, but more difficult than just order one...

That won't make a difference. That only sucks in air when the Filter is submerged. Other than that you are better off saving some money.

Seriously, just run the CAI in the winter. It's not bad for it at all. However, I would look into a filter cover of sorts. I know K&N makes one and mine is from outerwears. Snow will slip right off of it and itll also prevent pre-mature wear of filter due to exposure to water. Prob. the best 20 dollars I have ever spent.

I'm going to remove mine, and put the old one back in. I am in winnipeg, and my mustang runs really cold and rough in the winter, so I'll bet the cavy would do the same. Winters at -40 SUCKS! It won't hurt the car, but I'm sure it would take longer to warm up.

That's the answer I wanted. Thanks.

And I am from Winnipeg too, my cav ran fine with it last winter, just really loud.
I am going to leave it on.
