i know this may sound like wow you should have read the millions of pages on this kinda thing, but i dont have much time to read and read and read.
I would like to free up some hp, but without costing me my good mileage. I know a k&n air filter will give me better mileage, but would a cool air intake be even better.
I know colder air is more dense thus having more oxygen molecules. Im sure my stock airbox gives cool air, but im also sure a CAI could give better airflow. I would like to hear what some CAIs have done for you as far as mileage and noticable gains are conserned.
with a freeer flowing exhaust and a freeer flowing intake i would like to achieve over 40 miles per gallon. I have hit a tops of 37.6 mpg so im not that far away. I just need a few more.
thanks
p.s. if you are getting better mileage than me, please tell me how you achieved that mileage.
an msd ignition will get you there a different intake wont

Power gain: Not really noticeable, though I know it does free up a little horsepower.
Fuel mileage gain: You're most likely going to see decreased mileage for a while since the sound of the intake is gonna make you want to rev your car higher
But once you get past that stage, you might see a SLIGHT increase in fuel mileage, it depends on how you drive obviously - I wouldnt EXPECT anything though.
damn, what are you doing that i'm not? i only get 28mpg tops!
my mpg dropped when i got my intake. was always on the gas thinking i was cool.
GO PATS!!!
i think i will just settle with a k&n filter, but i want to know more about this MSD
where did you get it, how much does it cost, and what can i expect from it.
btw i have had my car for less than a month...03 2.2 ecotec, are my wires and plugs inside the black cover on my valve cover? i would like to get a manual and an owners manual soon, but for now the internet is free.
im cheap
i shift from 1st to 3rd to 5th. i noticed our cars if you shift from 1-2 at 2600 rpm you hit 2 at 1700 and 2-3 at 2600 you hit 3 at 1700 rpm, and so on. our gears are spaced evenly 1-5.
if you shift from 1st to 3rd at 3500 or so you will hit 3rd at 1700 rpms like you would have shifting from 2nd at 2600 rpm.
i got 32-33 for a while, then tuned my driving habits for mileage and driving 10-20 miles at a time the skip shifting really helps. dont bog your engine as most know this kills the main bearings and i think causes some pinging that might be detonation.
in the city i got 25 my last tank,
my exhaust is restrictive and my paper filter is too. i hope with those two things ans maybe an msd i could get better mileage.
i thought about changing plugs, but usually stock plugs are pretty good for economy of the car (mileage)
Well, the amount you would spend on an MSD would take a long time to recover in gas savings.
too bad i have an automatic. i got 25mpg highway on my last tank. having a lead foot sucks.
GO PATS!!!

That's what it really comes down to when you get an intake. If you drive like "granny", then yes, you'll have better gas mileage. If you drive like a bat out of hell, no you won't.
