keep 2.2 or swap for 2.4

I want to swap my 2.2 for a 2.4 LD9 ,what does this swap usually cost and would it be cheaper/better to just fix up my 2.2(engine kit from rsm, ported heads, throttle body)

If you can find a 2.4 with trans & wiring, pcm cheap enough go for it. All depends on how patient you are waiting for that perfect deal. If you need to purchase wiring brand new from GM it costs over 1k. Upper motor mount is like $80.

Dont know what a good price really is. I bought a 99 2.4 with 4spd auto tranny & axle shafts for $800 plus whatever else I wanted off the GA. But then I wasted tons of money on salvage yard wiring harnesses before I bought new from GM. As far as doing the swap, its about a days worth of work, maybe two at most.

is it more difficult/costly to do mods on the 2.4 such as turbo i heard you have to do more engine work than you would on a 2.2

i have a 2.2 and im modding that up. yea its the under-dog but whos to say one is better then the other, all have their benefits. I found this quote about the 2.2 a few minutes ago..

"With nearly two decades of continuous improvement, it remains Powertrain's highest-volume four-cylinder engine in North America."

Its a good lil engine and can compete with tha other boys if you mod it correctly.

By that train of thought if you mod the 2.4 "correctly" the 2.2 will yet still be the underdog. 2.2 2.4 I dont know, I'm a 2.3 guy

As far as the more costly/difficult to mod a 2.4? Don't know where that would come from. Sure there is more work required to tear it down obviously since its DOHC vs the 2.2 where the head can be off in 5 minutes. As ar as turbo, space would be the only difficulty Id see over the 2.2 & even then thats nothing. So as always its your car, put whatever motor in it you feel like dealing with. Unless you have the knowledge to put the 2.4 in yourself though I simply wouldnt bother since its probbly 40-70 an hour labor for something the mechanic can say took him 24 hours to do lol

Thanks you answered my question ,I think I'll just put a new 2.2 in my car I might be able to handle it with help from some friends ,also my car has 120k on it but it runs perfect should I bother trying to mod it or should I just swap the engine now before it dies

If you can pull a 2.2 & replace it with another, you can drop in a 2.4

I thought it would be more difficult to put the 2.4 in because of the wiring, trans and pcm. Does the 2.4 match up that well with the 2.2?does every thing need to be replaced or can i still use some 2.2 parts thanks

axles, radiator & lower motor mount are the same. Replace wiring last after the motor with trans are bolted in. New upper mount, coolant reservoir. It was well over 3 years ago that I swapped, cant remember all the differences but the wiring motor, trans & upper mount, pcm are the most. Wiring is easy enough to figure out. Removing all the wiring from a 2.2, pulling the motor & then plugging in everything once again would be the same task as wiring a 2.4.
