engine knocking

i have a 2.4 and when i start it up it knocks pretty bad. i heard it could be a lifter but i have no idea. what should i do and how much. and can i do it myself

I highly suggest taking it to a mechanic and not tampering with anything yourself if you don't have proper training.

DOHC motors don't have lifters man.

^ hahahaha edit that please. our engine have lifters. the 2.3 and 2.4 don't have ROCKERS.

they are cam followers. lifters are for pushrod motors.

well then explain to me where those "lifters" are located in the OHV.

the only difference between them OHV and the OHC is that they have push rods and rockers. They BOTH have LIFTERS.

Mfk-223 is right, 2.3 have 35mm lifters and 2.4 have 33mm lifters. They don't have pushrods and rockers but they have lifters right under the cams. The cams are pushing the lifters who are pushing the valves. They are there to ''take'' the gap between the cams and the valves.

Btw, we are arguying for something really stupid. Lifters are Cam followers and vice versa.

you guys arent helping me at all i dont care. what it has and doesnt have. what should i do. i know alittle about engines and i work at a dealer ship so i can get help

does it knock only at startup or all the time?

you can spin the #3 rod bearing very easily if the oil is low. Is it a really loud knock? we need more info.
