HELP, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Borla???
Friday, September 16, 2005 10:10 PM
Ok, I am getting a new full exhaust system (cat-back). And I have a few questions. First of all, does a full cat-back system include a cat-back? And if not I want to get a new one with some good airflow.

Now about my main topic, I want a deep nice sounding exhaust. As far as i know, between Flowmaster, Magnaflow and Borla. Flowmaster has the deepest, Magnaflow is in the middle and Borla has the highest pitched muffler. Why do I think this?? Cause I have only heard sample sessions of Magnaflow and Flowmaster and I have never heard a Borla. So someone please give me the correct order of deepness for each brand and give me their opinion on the sounds.

Now for my second questions. Perofrmance wise, what of those three brands is best. As far as I know Magnaflow is first, Flowmaster second, and Borla third. But I doubt I am anywhere near correct. Can someone straighten things out for me? Thanks

Ok I'll try to help you as much as possible...

A cat-back refers to everything on your exhaust system from your catalytic converter all the way back to the rear of your car, this does not include your catalytic converter. A cat-back setup includes your piping, reasonator (if you choose to have one) & muffler(s).

As far as how your exhaust sounds, that depends on how big your piping is, whether you have resonators or not and the type or company muffler you use. I personally like Magnaflow cat-back setup and Borla's setup...I believe Flowmaster doesn't have a cat-back setup for our cars.

Performance wise, they will all performance just about the same. You have to also start to learn that there is no BEST, it's all preference (for the most part).

I meant to say catalytic converter, ok so I guess I will just try to find some more audio clips of magnaflows and some for borlas.

Do you think I should get a new catalytic converter too? They run around $100 from magnaflow. I think it would be worth it to further optimize my exhaust.

My Magnaflow cat is awesome, I got it for $60 through my local shop, because I never pay retail. I think Karo can get them for you cheaper than $100

Yeah go for it. If you're going to upgrade your whole system, might as well keep it all the same inlet size all the way through.

i'd recommend picking your muffler and having a shop bend up a system for you... it'll be much cheaper than buying a premade system and you get to chose the muffler and tip you want.

here's a coupe borla sound clips... first is my car (02 cav, 2.2 ecotec, 2.25" piping from the cat, no resonator, borla pro xs muffler, brospeed tip), the rest are my friends grand am gt (97, 2.4 twin cam, 2.25" piping from the cat, no resonator, borla pro xs muffler and a pair of borla tips)

i don't want to jack this thread (sorry TBWJ 21) but maybe it'll help out...i have a dual cat-back from magnaflow, if i get their hi-flow cat, will it all pair up nicely with the RSM s/c i'm getting? can i expect some power gains? and for your information TBWJ 21, the magnaflow system i have is awesome, looks sweet, and it sounds great. it is deep enough (according to my preference).

Blown.

The Magnaflow cats I"d stick with because you can get them with the O2 sensor already installed on the cat.

And I'd stay away from the Flowmaster mufflers in general. Unles boosted maybe.
They are the most restrictive muflers in terms of flow and are among if not THE the heaviest ones out there.
Also they don't have any fibreglass packing material for sound deadening, but that's not too big of a deal.

The Magnaflows or Borla XS mufflers are usually the way to go.

Ok, I think I like the borla muffler sound better than the magnaflow, just because it sounds deeper. But then again I might be wrong.

One question, do most of you guys have a muffler, resonator, and a cat?? That sounds like a lot.

And I definitely want at least a 2.5 in setup cause I do plan on getting boosted in the future.

So to get all this would I just buy a magnaflow cat, and a borla muffler then have a shop bend the pipes and do everything else? And how much would that cost, cause the 2 1/4 in setup for the magnaflow cat-back exhaust costs like $720.

borla is expensive but is really high quality and i love the sound of it i can't go with anything else than borla i had magnaflow and borla and borla is deffinitly the best can easily be installed with no modification fits perfectly
and makes me drool

What i have on my car cost me about $400 total, about $200 for the tip, resinator, cat, and muffler. And then $200 for a shop to bend up pipe and intall everything.

So I was looking at Borla mufflers at their site. And I was thinking about getting one of their boomer mufflers, but they only have an inlet size of 2 1/4 in and I need at least 2.5 in. So I guess I will get a Turbo muffler, cause the Turbo XL are for bigger engines.

Then I guess I will get a magnaflow cat, and should I get a resonator?? And from where should I get one if I need one?

Ok I love that exhaust setup. Can you give me the link to buy it?? When I went to magnaflow.com and put in a chevy cavalier the dual setup they had had those bigger mufflers and costs $809 bucks. And I dk if I want to pay that for those big type of mufflers when I dont like the look of them. I know they have a different sound than the kind your car has, but I like the sound on the cylinder style mufflers better anyway.
