Short intake.. or Cold Air Intake?

Hey guys.. quick question.. I currently have a short ram air intake on my cavalier. I got it a few years ago, and when I got it.. I wasnt even quite sure it was for the right year! It didnt have a hole for the O2 sensor, so I had to modify it a little bit to fit my 2000.. it could possibly have been for a 95-99 cavalier.

Anyway, without a hood vent, is having a short air intake bad for the car? I mean, it's just sucking up all the hot air from the engine, right?? Should I go out and get a cold air intake (this would be the one that is longer, and kinda goes around the engine, and through towards the underside of the car, where it reaches some open space to get cold air)?

Im not very knowledgable in this department.. but it's the only logical idea I've got. The make of my current one is Bomz Racing.. I got it off ebay for like, 35bux... I dont feel any HP gains.. or any difference in sound either!!

Some companies aren't considerate enough to put a hole for the O2 Sensor but that's another story...

Back to your question, your "short ram" intake setup is fine. You don't need a hood vent, having one would help slightly bring the temperature down in your engine bay but not necessary. You have more airflow going in under your hood than you think...when your car is moving, air moves into your engine bay area, so your getting slightly warmer air in your intake but a good amount of cool air, about the same temp as outside would be.

A cold air intake is nice and all but not worth the money for you to swap out what you have. If it's hot outside, your catching hot air anyways. Also, with a CAI air has to travel further to actually reach your throttle body so your only gaining when your at high speeds when their is more air coming to cause more velocity.

So pretty much through all my rambling...just keep your current intake and spend your money elsewhere.

I'll agree with that....the only time i really worry about it is when im sitting in traffic...the the temp goes to close to 200......simply due to the fact that its sucking up all the warm air. keep in mind normal temp in 195.... if you're really worried about it you mount some sort of fan in there somewhere right by your filter.....never tried it.....but im sure it would work right? or i could be completely wrong and sound like a jackass

Cavalier z24......A poor man's Camaro....close enough, right?

If your in traffic for a long period of time and it does go up a notch or two, you can easily throw on you A/C (yes A/C not heat...I've done it plenty of time) and it will bring it back to normal temp. The reason it can drop it down is because it throws on your secondary fans to cool your motor back down. My temp climbs easily because of my header, oh well. While driving you should be fine though.

Actually shawn fox, a little correction. You said while sitting still it will be sucking up air into the motor. That's not really possible. When you foot isn't on the gas pedal, the throttle body is closed and the butterfly should cover the whole inside throttle body so there aren't any holes (if there were, your car would be reving for no reason...which is a bad thing).

easier trick would be to do the cooling fan override...

you can turn on the fan without engaging the ac clutch which can add more draw... but if you want the a/c then just turn on the a/c

agree with both posts though.
