Info on 2.2L

Hello everyone... I new here. I bought a 96 Cavalier that has a lock up 2.2L. The guy I bought it from said it was ticking and lost power before it stopped. I tried searching the forum for info on this motor, but I haven't seen what I was looking for. I need info on any know problems with the 2.2 and what other motor will bolt in with minor changing. I was looking at the 2.3L or 2.4L from 95-99. Can someone point me in the right direction and give me some websites or links.

You can pretty much take any motor from a Jbody and swap it in there. The only thing is that you can't use the same tranny you have now & you need the ECU and other parts.

The only problems that I know about the 2.2 OHV is that after time, they tend to overheat. A couple occasions I've heard the 2.4s overheating also.

2.2 or atleast the 2200 have AC compressor explosions, Water pumps like to die and some head gasket problems.

This car was overheating too. What's problem does the 2.2 have that makes it over heat? Most 2.2's I've heard run have a ticking sound and very guttless. Does it have lifter problems at high miles?

I dont know, mine has the overheating problem, and everything is new. I have 62000 miles on the car, With a new heater core, new radiator, all new plumbing, new water pump, new Overflow tank, New thermostat, All new gaskets, and it still runs real warm.

mine overheated once, and thats because the harness for the rad fan had been cut (somehow)

I have a bit of lifter tick too, there's not too much you can do about it though.

In terms of water pumps, dont fool yourselves cause the 2.4's will tend to go just as often as a 2.2.

just be thankful that the water pumps on 2.2's are easy to change. (as compared to the 2.4 which is a b*tch)

124,000kms and still on the factory head gasket. 2nd water pump, 2nd alternator.

I'm at 158,000 in my car and it takes a beating at the races every weekend. Stock bottom end, block hasn't been touched other than standard maintenance. Replaced head gasket once. Replaced serpentine belt once or twice, a few alternators (never buy reman alternators) but haven't had to replace water pump, oil pump, or anything "major" yet. The only "major" thing that I had wrong with my motor was a cracked cyl head when I bought it. However... we took care of that right away. By the time I had the cracked head off the car, the new one was already at the machine shop!

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

I found a plain 2.2 motor from a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. Will ever bolt up to that? Or was there alot of changes from 1996?

Read this, gives a history of the motor and a breakdown of engine interchangeability:
