Increase compression?

Ok I am one of them damn newbies clogin up the boards with a question that has probably already been answered but i couldnt find it. My question is how do you increase the compression? I would assume you would add a taller piston would do it. I know that newbie talk for sure but I am not gonna try and sound smart about something i know not much about. Me and my chiltons got the head off of my car and to the machine shop to be pressure tested, resurfaced, valves done and a port and polish. The guy there said not to expect much from the pnp without increasing air/fuel in and increasing exhaust out. Makes sence to me. He also said that typical compression for the 2200 is probably around 8.5 and that if i increased it to 9.5 I would get the most bang for my buck. he said going from 9.5 to 10 or 10.5 ya really wouldnt notice the difference as much. If anyone can shed some light on to this subject it would be appreciated.

Signed the newbie

Stock ratio on your engine is 9:1. If you don't want to go to boost later, you could go 10 or 10.5, but if you are wanting to add boost or a supercharger later, then I would stay at 9:1 or even go down to 8.5.
