Gotta Question about CAI.
Sunday, June 12, 2005 10:51 PM
Hey guys, I just like to say I am proud owner of 2001 cavalier, By the way this site is Awsome. I got a question Ive 01 cavalier, I am looking into getting a CAI, Ive seen people just buying the B&N performance cone and hooking it up to the stock Rubber intake tube to the throttle body with the airbox removed? Dont know if thats a good Idea? Or is it just worth getting the proper polish tube and filter cone?.

Any Idea's guys?

Thanks.

depends on what you want to do to your car. if its a project that you are going to put a lot of money into, and really make it fast or look nice, then i would just spend the money and get an AEM or INJEN intake.

but if its just a car that you want to drop 50$ into to make it fun, then just buy the cone filter and stick it in-place of the airbox, although i wouldnt, and dont think its a great idea.

you can get an AEM CAI for like 200$. not much to spend for a few extra horses and somthing that looks shiny under your hood

well I am not looking for an show and shine ride, Just looking to add some hp performance, Ive just seen people add a K&N cone filter cone, Just wondering if thats good route to go? Up here in Canada CAI is pretty expensive for the polished tube.

thanks for youre reply though

^^^^ i agree with his post. since you are in canada, the diffrences between CAI and WAI isnt huge, so just get a WAI shortram for a little more then what a cone filter costs

I live in Canada and this past week the temperature has been a humid 105 degrees fahrenheit... (41 celsius). People don't realize but It gets hot up here. My WAI setup sucks when it is that hot,..... I feel the car lagging...

I would go CAI, but constantly cleaning the filter and the minor gains dont do anything for me...

what do you think that so called "Cold Air" intake is going to do when its 105 outside? its gonig to be sucking in that 105 degree air. sort of defeats the purpose..

people see "Cold Air" and automatically think that it is better when it is not

Well I am just looking for little more performance, Plus the stocker filter system is way more restrictive, I am not looking for crazy 230hp, It would be nice dont get me wrong, I am just trying to get a little input for little bit of performance.

then just stick with a AEM intake that ends behind the battery

well not really , u buy a cold air intake for more hp,so when u race somebody u have more power ,which makes ur car more faster inorder to win.So try this, go in ur car, close da door and open ur window.Take ur hand ,put it outside da window ,and feel da temperature outside wit ur hand .Now drive on to da thru way ,put ur hand outside da window ,then go really fast. Now if u dont feel da diference in temp from ur hand u most be really special ,b/c when i did it ,my hand began to feel more colder da faster i went . So when people dyno there car wit a cold air intake, there car is not really moving anywhere , there wheels r just spin in da same spot, plus most like there dynoing indoor in which da temp is constantly da same and da walls also keeps in da heat.

CAI is a advertising gimmick, u dont thk the air in ur hood moves around? wind blows through that too ya know. also look how many bends are un ur CAI. Id go with WAI if I wwere you.

hows da wind going to reach your inake filter if its behind ur batterie?

escabano, put your hand to the ground when it gets warm out and drive around. but even then the CAI is not exposed to moving air like that.

depend where ur filter is placed ,also heat rises so da wai takes air from da heats trapped from right under da hood.

escabano you are correct. you might make an extra HP or 2 but is it worth all that extra money? you do enough just freeing up the breathing. granted i paid 180 for mine while others paid 40 to build their own, but 300 and up is just a lil too redicolous. im talking about the ecotec engine but i think that goes for any car. the CAI is always goin to be more expensive. some people will tell you to make your own though.

I think what 99redz24 is saying escobano is that the air circulates throughout the engine bay while your moving because air comes in through the front grill section between the hood and bumper. Thats how it gets to the filter when its behind the battery, c-i-r-c-u-l-a-t-i-o-n. Just incase you dont know what i'm talking about, here is a picture of a warm air intake I found on the internet:

****This is by no means a way to offend you, if it does I am terribly sorry.****

I also just needed a reason to use that picture because my friend was bitchin at me to use it, I tell ya, people these days.

The yellow arrows show what I mean by circulation,

in addition you can lose throttle response as well.

if anyone is worried about heat, run a short ram (warm air intake is apart of the marketing bullsh__ people fall for) and make a heat sheild.

if its good for 300,000$ + racecars, its good enough for anyone else. proof? look in most SCCA cars like real time accura, etc.

beleive or not, the air under your hood does move around.
and when companines like AEM, Injen, etc etc dyno intakes and other products its in the most perfect conditions. usually anyway.
now if you wnat your "Cold Air" intake to be sucknig in cold air, you can always a little AC commpressor inside the bumper where the filter is. but with the extra long pipe and extra bends, it makes the engine work harder to get the air into it. sort of losing whatever power you might of gained

Air will reach it but what i meant was that the warm air produced by the engine doesnt just sit there like a its inside a airtight chamber or something, it moves around.

the wai i had never added anything, the cai's have always done well... imo i have always been a little shaky on the having an intake right behind a fan that blows hot air right into it... never made much sense to me

$200 aem cai and never had a problem
