Going with a ram air setup lil input pls
Thursday, June 09, 2005 9:34 PM
I had a warm air intake put in for a while and just been to lazy to remove it since i got my Ram Air Hood and finally got the energy to put back my Factory Air box....now what i need to do is cut a hole in the box where the air induction kicks in i was wandering if anyone had an easy method of doing so.

The idea i came up with was to take some kinda putty, playdoh or whatever put it on the box and shut the hood that way i know its lined up correctly, then trace with an exacto knife or something where the induction lines up and using a dremmel to cut the hole from there i was gonna put some kinda screen over it using some kind of cocking?
then depending on how much space is between the 2 holes putting a heat resistant plastic foam tubing to give it a good seal so im not losing any of the air.

1. Is this method a reliable way of doing it?
2. If so what kinda screening should i use
3. What kinda heat resistant cocking or whatever to make the foam/screening stick
4. Even though ram air is meant for higher speeds and higher excelleration will i notice a diffrence from the warm air intake i had in there (im throwing a K&N Drop in filter in if that matters at all)

Thx for taking the time to read this and any feedback or comments is greatly appreciated

You aren't going to get any gains from the ram air hood, stick with the wai under the scoop duct

One of the reasons i wanted to give this setup a try was for gas milage for some reason i seem to get way better gas milage with the stock airbox im usually throwing $10 in every other day now im doin every 3 days driving the same amount of milage *shrugs* just figured i'd try something new like to save money on gas if i can with the prices there at now =(

How are you driving your car? Experience tells me that you like the sound of your intake and you push it harder to hear it everytime you take off. This will almost certainly make your mileage go down. Personally I'd just keep the WAI on, and have the air comming from the scoop hitting the filter.

i have the RK sport hood and the hole cut in the stock air box and it does @!#$ all.. don't waist your time... just get a decent cold or warm air intake... trust me on this one.. i didn't do it though.. i bought the car from a dealer ship that had put the rk sport body kit and hood on and cut the hole in the air box and sold it... And yes its not the after market intake thats effecting your gas mileage... its your lead foot thats connected to your ears that is giving you your bad gas mileage....also it could be if your filter is clogged.. you will see bad gas mileage if it is... with my stock air box and the rk sport hood soo much dust would go threw the scoop and into the filter and clog it very fast... Also take a look down the hood scoops... very very restrictive and little air flow actually goes through it.

Your better off going through your bumper. That's actually how I have mine currently.

Old picture but you can see somewhat of a hose at the tip of the intake:

A REALLY old picture but you can see where it mounts on the inside of my bumper:

I dont beleive the gas thing has anything to do with a "leadfoot' i hardly notice a noise from the WAI so i never rly pushed for anything noise wise, i alrdy got the factory box back in anyhow im gonna give it a shot just for @!#$s and giggles see if i personally see a diffrence seeing there a pain in the ass to take off as it is ( battery, move fuse box, etc etc.

still compare the two air filters you are using on the two set ups.. like i said when i put in a fresh air filter or when i clean out my K&N i notice a huge gain in gas mileage

Honda Rapist,

I say put in the stock set up as well.
The key thing is to pick up the coolest air possible. With the ram-air hood you are picking up outside air (cooler air) and with stock factory system now you have another source to picking up some more cooler air.
Air intake is always in vacuum mode, so with these two source picking up cooler air means more in the engine performance.
WAI, I see it as being useful if only you put a plate behind the filter so the hot air from the engine does not sip in and the wai filter was working in conjunction with opening of the hood. Other wise, you'll just get warm air and a loss in performance.

As for opening up I used a round drill to make holes on doors for locks (2 holes) then smooth out the edges to biggest opening possible.

*Personal experience*: Hard to believe, but I did a dyno test on filters GM vs K&N and I found out the the GM's filter w/9000 miles (still very clean) of use on it gave me 1.4HP more then the K&N thats just cleaned and oiled. So since then, I am using the GM filter setup. On a plus note too, GM filter's filter out better then the K&N product, so the engine inside has less debree.
Good luck!

Good "cocking" always takes care of things.

jp

I say do it.....how, I dunno, cuz I've never checked out one of the hoods to see what would be required. If you get it, be sure to post pics!
