Hey i searched for this but couldn't find anything. I have a 99 2200 head I want to get port and polished, also add stainless steel valves. The engine also has a CAI and 110,000 miles, want to run all stock internals also, for now. It will remain all motor. I was told by 2 different machine shops in my area that if I use the stock cam, it will be worthless to PnP the head. But if I open up the exhaust (2 1/4, Dynomax Bullet, and header), and port match the intake, I dont see how it would not flow. I know I can send my cam to Crane and have a regrind done, but I dont wanna pull it yet. Another ?, when you guys get a PnP done, do you have them do 1.7/1.4? Im open to any other advice since I'm a newbie to the 2200 performance.

The only other thing I can think of on this is that the stock cam is only designed to flow so much air and make so much power, and if it isnt redone there will be minimal gains.

Jbodyperformance.com has NA and FI cam profiles you might be interested in.

How much does it usually cost average to get a port and polish done at a shop? That's something I would never try to do myself, so I'd have to take it to a shop to get it done.
Theres a pro shop here that wanted around 300 to do it, then there was a mediocre shop that has a guy that does it on the side and he told me 100. Just call the local shops and ask em.

A couple things...the machine shop is sort of right. You will gain power but not as MUCH as if you get a different camshaft profile. By changing the parts in the head it will help you rev faster.
My advice to you, it's better to buy a complete head that has been port and polished with all the goodies installed for you and it has been flow tested for the best air flow amount you need rather than taking it to a shop that knows nothing of your head and just porting it to some random amount.
My ECOTEC head was built by Patriot Performance. They did a great job and was a good price for it. Lucky for you they also make a complete head for your 2.2 OHV, check it out here:

Like said before, check out

Good luck to you.

Hey thanks a lot for the post Honda Killa. I have seen that complete Patriot head, and if mine is cracked (I just pulled it out, gonna get it tested tomorrow)I will definately be buying the Patriot head. Thanks again.

Note that the head is a 2.2L, not the 2200. The intake ports dont match up.
Yeah it is isnt it, thanks for the heads up. I thought for sure they had one available for the 2200. Im emailing now and asking if they have one for a 2200.

Mike Wayne please let us know if they do have one for us 2200 guys , i am intrested in getting one to .
They just informed me that they do not have one available for the 2200. I know the price is a little more, but check out www.mantapart.com (they go for about $850) and www.rsmracing.com (about $800), and for those who need internal parts like higher compression pistons and rods, go to www.cavalierconnection.com. They have some pretty killer stuff. But every once in awhile, you can find a machine shop that will port and polish your head for fairly cheap, as is the case with me. I made friends with a guy that ended up hooking me up with a pressure check to see if my head was cracked, and put new valves in it, and cleaned it up real nice for $50. And he said he'd port and polish for $100 and port match the intake for $50. Ended up my head is in good shape, just needs a new head gasket. So I'll be good to go. And I'm gonna wait till i rebuild it and get a new cam, higher compression pistons, etc. before i port and polish the head because I'll have to take it all apart again anyway. Good hunting, guys.

Any chances of Patriot Performance doing an LD9 head?

Wow glad to see I am not the only one with this problem lol. I just dropped my head off at a local shop as well. Port and polish $100 three way valve job $80 pressure test $35. I went not knowing much but the guys really taught me more than I thought in just a few minutes. He said basicly the same thing..... port and polish wont do much on its own until ya increase the flow in and out and then you will see the difference.... Now maybe its just me but if the head is out and its going to make a difference down the road might as well do it while its out rather than have to take it back out later. Just my opinion. I do have some other questions though while the head is out what other things should I be looking to replace? I also have the 2200 (yippie skippy) has anyone seen a fuel rail for this motor anywhere in their search the original looks really chinsey also any suggestion or recomendations as to fuel injectors that i might want to install? Im working on that more in more out idea the guy gave me at the shop. Work with me here I am still a newbie myself. The entire exhaust needs to be replaced and since the header is off now no time like the present. I saw the thing about the headers in the performance section and i am thinking about going with the 4.2.1. any input would be a great help.
wow those are nice prices for the patriot heads compared to jbp's 3500 canadian dollars for their race head w/ cams

15.958 @ 88.201 stock, still getting @!#$ty launches...
did my own port and polish. cam came from howell automotive. porting was an easy job.
