i have a 1995 cavalier 2.2 and i went to the GM sales manager at the chevrolet dealer close to my house to find out if there is a speed limiter on my car and at what speed it limits. he told me that all they had then is a rmp limiter. can anyone help me to find the right information for this. thanks for your help.
They have both a speed limiter and RPM limiter. Speed limiter is 108mph and rev limiter is either 6250 or 6500 RPM's.
Before you ask your next question, about disabling the speed limiter, I need to stop you though, you won't get the information here, and will only end up with this post being deleted and you getting a warning, just FYI.

that is just hoggilygook nonsense, disable a speed limiter, hahahaha. like us common folk would be able to usurp the grand engineering of the General. why you sir are ludicrous for even insinuating that such a feat were possible.
As Shifted stated, no one on the .org will tell you hot eliminate your speed limiter, no we arent mean guys who want an advantage over any other car we roll up against because most of us do know how to defeat the system. We will not provide this information because we have a concern for public saftey.
The J-bodies were not designed to handle speeds beyond 108mph, the suspension, tires, over all dynamics of the car will not support these speeds on any public road, you may be good enough to control the car in its out of control chaos, but its a huge risk, not only to yourself but to all those around you, the tires on most of these cars are only rated to around 115 to 125 depending on marks, if you have cheap wal mart tires on your car do not run up over 100 you face the real chance of your tires overexpanding and exploding leaving you a well propelled 2800 pound missle, even with upgrades speeds above 100 mph on a public road WILL land you in jail either on attempted manslaughter or man slaughter charges if you hit something, in the state of missouri any speed beyond 90 is instant jail most states are similar.
There are several websites that will inform you of how to do things to your car most are illegal, including defeating the limiter because the limiter is also reponsible for your mileage so deactivating that makes your odometer wrong and makes your car worth a big fat zero, thats right odometer fraud, such as the car traveling even 1 mile without registering mileage makes it illegal to sell the car.
Now if your car is modified enough to support drag strip speeds in excess of 108mph, which i seriously doubt as you dont seem to know a whole lot about the j-bodies in general, then there are a few on here who know how to do it who will help you out, your best bet if your running really low e.ts lower than 13s in the quarter go to a gm dealership and find out if you can get a reflash/update to remove the speed limiter as this is the ONLY legal way to go about doing it.
J~
^ A dealer cannot legally remove a speed limiter, no matter what you do in the 1/4.

I think the Js can handle more then 108. Im not an expert obviously but I feel they can. Is 108 what GM said or were people driving 108 and bad things just happened?
108 is what the engineers decided that designed the j platform, i'm sure the cars could better that but saftey first, besides who really needs to be above 108 in a cavy? thats just nuts, as for the comment about the dealer removing it, my point was the only legal way to remove it and not make the car worthless is a reflash, not neccessarily that the dealer would willingly remove the speed limiter
lol imagine the mechanics face on that one, you want me to what? lol

I believe the Blazer has a lower top speed limiter than the J body does... anyone know for sure?
The gist of the "limiter removal" debate... it's illegal to go that fast... and if you were really going that fast in the quarter mile, you'd probably know how to get rid of the limiter already... because a stock J-car is NEVER gonna make it there in a quarter mile
No one here is gonna help you break the law... and probably kill yourself and possibly others. Actually... hmmm.... maybe I will help... ROFL j/k

Yeah 108mph is definetly fast enough, hell I went 140mph just recently while I was over in England visiting my relatives, except that speed was reached in a "slightly" modified R32 Skyline that my uncle owns, oh and keep in mind that wasn't going down the motorway's, it was on a small back road so that made it even more nerve racking. I'm not one for fast speeds since I dont like Drag racing, I prefer Autocross personally. But good luck with further ventures to become fast. All the power to ya...
