OE muffler on a fully upgraded exhaust
Saturday, June 04, 2005 10:37 PM
Is there any performance drawback with slipping a stock muffler on a fully upgraded exhaust system (4-2-1 header, hi-flo cat, & 2 1/4" piping throughout)?

I tried the RKSport Magnaflow muffler and it was way too loud.
I tried the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler and it was still too loud.
I slipped on a stock muffler and it sounded just right, in that you could tell that the exhaust wasn't stock. Mellow tone, no raspiness, no angry bees, and quiet inside the car.

I know that optimum flow is achieved using the straight-through pipe design, but are there really any noticeable performance drawbacks using a stock muff?

ya put either a Borla or Magnaflow muffler on it and get a resonator....see my post a few down about resonators to help you find a good one

straight through muffler is the best and ^^what they said, get a resonator. and get the longest one you can fit under there.

get at least an 18" lomg resonator, i think you can get a 24" in there, and then any muffler you want.

Whats the point of all the aftermarket exhaust is you are just gonna put the stock muffler on. Thats stupid, well at least you wont be buzzing around like the rest of the domestic ricers out there.

Its not going to affect performance a whole lot. The stock muffler is kind of big. A smaller straight through will show a better performance, but its not a night and day difference. Maybe a couple of horsepower. If you like the sound keep it. It does give a sleeper look though.

Thanx for the input crackajax. After riding around for a couple hundred miles with this new setup, I decided to go with a stock muff just to eliminate all the noise. Walker exhaust makes a decent one, their "Quiet Flow" OEM quality line. I'm having a stainless Magnaflow 3" round tip welded to the end of it for a nice look. Sadly, the tip will outlast the muffler.

If anyone is looking for near stock acoustics from their exhaust setup, here's the muffler to get: Walker Quiet Flow oval muffler stock #21200, 2 1/4" inlet/outlet, offset/center, 16" muffler body, 19" overall length and best of all it's only $55.

I am GM S/C and for 5 days I was running two Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers and 28 inch resonator on 2.5 mandrel-pipe all around. After 5 days I removed the dynomax mufflers and kept all the large piping and put the stock mufflers back.
When I had the Dynomax I lost a great deal of low-end torque and lost a little on top-end lost alot on MPGs and the main reason I dropped the dynomax muffler, because it was too freaking loud.
I put on the stock mufflers, it was the best move ever for the exhaust setup, my torque was back to normal the top-end gained a tad bit and best of all I am get better gas mileage then before all this mess. Best of all, I am not going insane listening to the booming sound. I guess I am getting to old.

Very costly mistake, I will never ever do again. But lesson learned.
Good luck

Goodwrench: I noticed the same thing, that the car seemed to be more torquey with the stock muffler on as compared to the Dynomax & Magnaflow. I don't understand that one. Does the back pressure created by the stock muffler contribute to that?

I've used several mufflers through the years: Thrush, Flowmaster 40, Flowmaster 50, Magnaflow, and Dynomax Super Turbo. You're not the only one getting old, after 10 years with this car and a lot of noise coming from the rear, the now present quiet growl is a welcome change. My girl likes it too because we can now hear one another when I'm driving my car.

Bronx,
It looks like yhea 4cyls do need some sort of back preassure. I heard mixed reviews at the muffler shops, but in the end we do need it. It looks like the stock muffler does that. I bought the super turbo because it was not strait through, thinking I was still getting some sort of back-pressure, I guess dynomax is a free flow as well. I know I am still getting a power and better MPG and I think that is because of 2.5in pipes and still using two outlets.
But I tell ya, it sounded very nice the first 15min after leaving the shop, but did I get tired quick.

I would like to share with ya in full detail of the expiriance here.-Clicky
