well I just had exhaust put on my 04 ecotec cavy. I went with 2.5" cat back (getting ready for a turbo ) then a borla pro xs muffler with twin tips. I love it but it is kinda sluggish in low rpms but stronger in my higher rpms and lacking the throttle response ( I think ). but my muffler shop told me the I wouldn't need a resonator is this true? and could that be my problem
its all a matter of choice really, I didnt like the sound I had without a resonator it was really high piched and extremely raspy, so I got one, it really helps with the raspy tone to the exhaust, and I like it a lot better with the resonator.
An exhaust is only as good as the smallest part. So if you have stock piping before your new cat back then it won't feel all that great. I posted something, that is what Event had said, and I had heard it elsewhere. But if your exhaust sounds like a big fart can then get a resonator. Get a big one, I have an 18 incher and should have gone bigger.
I do hope you upgrade the rest of your exhaust when you get your turbo...
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Which in this case is the rest of your 1 7/8" exhaust piping.

The sluggishness you are experiencing along with the lack of throttle response is due, in my opinion, to having 2.5" exhaust. From what I have read here and other forums, 2.5" is too big on an N/A ECOTEC and causes a loss of low end power. Hell, even with 2.25", I lost a little low end when I put my header on.
However, the turbo you are planning should take car of all that

that or his "cold air" intake....
the longer the pipe, the longer it has to travel and the slower the velocity will be.
short rams are always known to have more throttle response over a long ram intake.
all true. what you are experiencing with your exhaust is what i am experiencing with mine except for i have a test pipe, no cat. N/A motors need a little bit of backpressure for low-RPM torque and with that large of piping, you don't have it. It'll work great once the car is boosted, but like they said, upgrade the rest of your exhaust piping as well. 2.5" turbo-back piping will work wonderfully.

thanks for the input guys what short ram intake you you suggest?

make your own is my vote. never been a fan of overpaying for what i can do myself
short rams are cheap just stay away from ebay intakes in my opinion. i bought my injen short ram for $125 and then converted it to a cold air a few months later.
