I was just curious if anyone has run higher ocatne fuel.... 92-93...... on the ecotec motor. the manual says it only needs 87, but i was just curious if any one has tried something higher and noticed better 1/4 mile times, gains, etc. if you have noticed gains, list mods. of course a forced induction or nitrous setup is gonna use higher octane, but i figured this might be a decent post to see if anyone has actually tried it and noticed a difference other than on the butt dyno.
Higher octane = slower burning flame. The Eco is calibrated for an 87 octane fuel, so unless you are FI, higher octane is a waste of money.
Octane simply slows down the flame front in the combustion chamber, producing a "softer" explosion, which is why FI cars use it, to reduce the chance of knock or reduce the harsh conditions due to running lean.

I always use 89... Car runs great

89 is BS. I doubt it really is 89 octane. Save your money and use 87. It works the best. If you think 89 or 93 works better, its all in your head.

so what about those who get FAR better gas mileage? or smoother idle? just askin
granted higher octane is harder to burn, msd does make a bit of difference to a setup.

I know the answer to that. They put more expensive gas in their car so they decide not to floor it all the time, because thats wasting gas and all the money they spent. And the smoother idle (idk)....how can they prove its so much smoother?
at idle you can tell whether a car runs smoother or not... especially those of us with upper and lower engine mounts... vibes are transfered, but sometimes not as harsh.
also on fear of flooring it.... for those who do add higher octane, they will probably floor it even more knowing it burns slower....
money is like gas... if you know its gonna disappear slower, your definately gonna try and use more of it...
only things that go fast, do people as a whole try to conserve

see thats the problem. In all of the posts about this a couple of people claim that it burns faster. They have it backwards.
all i know is my car feels hella sluggish with 92+ octane in! But when I spray all that goes away! Feels really tourqey with 87-89 though!

well so far in this post i dont believe anyone has said that....
i dont deny what you said, but just pertaining to this post.
but when you said

on that same bit of doubt, do you think 87 is really 87? i mean if you are gonna water something down, then you;re prob gonna do it at all levels even though its garunteed to be that number at minimal right?
so 86, might even be a lesser grade?????
ive used 89 for a while now, i get AWSOME highway millage, dont know if my engine is a freak engine or that plays a part in it, but ive hit almost 45 MPG on all highway driving...thats like toyota prius territory
i wouldnt use 93 on a stock engine, could end up clogging the cat up
same^^^ when i started pulling way over 400 miles per full tank, i stayed with 89. just from my 128K now, and bought the car with 16 miles after the test drive.... msd offers a more powerful spark, so i am def able to burn it...

I'm not denying that. Some these small gas stations do something to their gas, because my friends and I have had our cars running like @!#$ after filling up. I only go to big name places now. Some of these small places price their gas really cheap and the difference between 87 and 93 octane is only 5-7 cents, when other places usually have about a 20 cents difference.
But really, 87 works the best performance wise without FI, nitrous, or high compression.

or you have msd that can use higher octane.
that i dont deny...
easy way to view it....
i view octane like i view caloric intake and expenditure in health and fitness.
dont take in more that you can efficiently and effectively burn, and you wont waste
I always use 92, course I'm running boost annnndd as a promo on of the local stations has 92 for the same price as 87 on thursdays

i get better mileage on 89. but when i go to the track, i make sure i have nothing but 92 in the tank because of the nitrous

sunoco 94 octaine is the @!#$

Agreed. That is all I use and I get far better mileage then both of my friends, one own a 99 z24 and and the other a 98 z24 that is the same as mine. For the money difference, in my opinion, it is worth the 94 octane.
I wish we had more than 91 octane here.
even reuglar sunoco when im broke works well, better milage for sure sunoco is the best gas i think esso is garbage so is shell and the odd time i will take petro canada
So you people claim that 87 works just as good as 92...? Yea, I'll buy that one
My car has always run better on 89. I tried 87 and the car seemed to lose its pep kinda. They wouldn't sell 3 different octanes, if they all ran the same way...
