What years was the 2.4L non ecotec used in the 3rd gen?
What was the difference from 1998 to 1999? I had a '99 Z, and didn't know it was any different from a '98 or under Z.

Slightly higher compression. 9.7:1 as opposed to the '98 and earlier 9.5:1 compression. So the '96-'98 2.4 are the same, and the '99-'02 engines are the same, but the '96-'99 ECM had the same fuel and spark curves, which are found to be slightly more agressive than the program in the 2000 and up ECM's. I believe that's why most of the "factory freaks" people talk about happen to be 1999 2.4 twin cam cars. They had the benefit of the slightly higher compression ratio and the more aggressive program. But the slight bump in compression obviously wasn't enough for GM to consider a new HP rating, and I don't blame them. 150 is a nice round number, they'd sound stupid changing the rating for a couple ponies. "Now rated at 153.57 HP!"

Also, 96 to 98 had a EGR valve, the 99 to 02 didnt. The Knock sensors are different too.
