Torn on what to do..
Friday, April 29, 2005 10:09 PM
Well i have been running different ideas back and forth with some people on what i'd like to see come out for my car. I have realized its not going to be economical for me to swap motors out of my car and so go for a 2.4L swap or even a 3800 S/c. So i know i am going to see what i can get out of my 99 2.2 OHV auto, with low miles. Its just about to turn onto 57K. Now that i know i am going to see what pushrods can do, i am torn on wheather i want to build it for N/A and go high compression pistons, New cam, and forged rods, etc( run a high shot of N20 on it) or build it low compression and have it blown. I met some great guys last summer over JBO ( Chris ) and good things have amounted from that and i was then introduced to the RD FABs guys. Really knowledgable and talatend with fabrication and probably some of the best friends i have met in a long time. So doing either one of these is definitly feasable and there is a place to work. But what i would like to know is, i know a turbo will show me some really nice power, but what about a totally built N/A engine? I am done with bolt on mods, and i want to tear my engine apart and start some serious fun, but i'd like to have an idea on which way i want to go. I am leaning more towards N/A though.. whats your opinion... oh and BTW... i drive a sedan.

i think to go N/A and not using a turbo to maybe push 14's is a better idea, id love to have a fast 4 banger thats n/a

I'd rather cheat and be in the 13s.

yea... i am leaning towards N/A... seeing i have alot of stuff already here making it wasted money if i was to boost it. The header i just ordered would be a waste of money.

First of all I'd have to say what ever you do, do it the right way! lol

As far as doing something with a '99 2.2 though, I'd have to say that you should go turbo.

I believe the fastest n/a pushrod 2.2L was a 13.xxx sec car. Gutted out, no air filter. Just not a street car.

I say boost would get you there faster and cost you less. With full interior trim.

Just need pistons, rods, gskt set, bearings, and boost.

I have no need to be the fastest, i am just going to have fun with my car and see where it takes me.

then in that case, which is finally an honest answer among the many, i;d say sit back, think about all the pros and cons and then make a choice.

reason? to be the fastest, you are gonna shell some money. sky is the limit with most engines cause most havent shelled in enough money to literally reach the limits.

boost, it can be safe, but the more boost you go the more chance you take in shortening the life. its a rule of thumb, the more stress you add to something the shorter its lifespan.

nitrous, can be safe as well, but still an extra stress, and an instant one at that.

N/A can achieve the same as above, but comes with a limit after some point, but for most will be more than enough and still remain more reliable over time with (hopefully if assembled correctly and precisely) less down time. less maintainence, and more time to have fun.

also if you dont go too high in compression ratio, you can always supercharge it down the road, which is why i went this route.

you can also run nitrous on it later as well.

agreed. the last 2 things I ever put on my car will be that. I would like to get an RSM Charger. That will be the last thing I put into my engine. I'm building my engine before I boost. If the charger ain't fast enough I can still put nitrous into it!!

Heres my 2 cents. If you get the 2.4 motor, yeah its a good motor as far as power but it's now an old motor and is not supported by that many companies. If you do a 3800 S/C swap, that's alot of fabricating and alot of time/money to get it done but that's up to you if you want to spend that much. If you have to swap out your motor, go for ECOTEC motor and get it as a combo with a manual transmission. GM is supporting them like crazy now and so are other companies that are jumping on the bandwagon. The more success the ECOs are doing in the Pro FWD, the more companies will recognize the market for the ECOTEC motor. You can find them on ebay really cheap. After that, your next step should be boost...going n/a with our motors is extremely hard to put out impressive #s. Whether you want turbo or supercharger, it's up to you. I personally want the GM supercharger as soon as it comes out. I see people with the ECOs that boost and not impressed with the outcome.

Also, I'm not telling you to get an ECOTEC cause I have one...this is more of an outside perspective. Good Luck with your decision.
