Which Motor Mounts?
Friday, April 22, 2005 9:14 PM
Hey guys, I'm looking into picking up both upper and lower motor mounts. I'm not getting RSM"s because I haven't heard much about them. According to Gravana the lower mount by Prothane is the same thing that RK makes? Are they in fact the same exact thing just rebranded? The link below shows one end of the lower mount being bigger by RK and then they are the same size in the one Prothane has. Cany anybody guide me?

the lower mounts you see on Gravana, RSM, or Carcustoms are all the same. no difference in them except price and color

ok thanks, so no brand will be stiffer than the other? Pretty much what i'm saying I guess is that it doesn't metter whether I pick prothane, rsm, or rk?

Being relatively new to the scene, exactly how do aftermarket motor mounts assist performance? (I know, it's a stupid question but what can I say?)

They help give better power transfer to the ground. The stiffer mounts result in a more efficient transfer of power. You won't get any horsepower gains (well duh) but helps to use what you have. YOu will feel a bit of difference in acceleration from a standstill, as well as some possible in cabin dash vibrations due to the stiffness. Though some people don't really notice any of that at all..it just really depends

The mounts keep the engine from shifting around in the compartment. This also helps insure you don't mess up a header, if you don't have a flex pipe on you exhaust.

Make them

i have RK's...there pretty nice...the ones you are looking at may be diffrent..the bushing durometer(the raiting of stifness for bushings) may be higher or lower...the higher the durometer then harder the bushings...which would result in less engine movement but more rattles

Will replacing only the upper mounts have enough of an effect or do I need to do the lower as well?

I order my upper mount from rk sport and i was impressed with the difference it made. I was able to feel the increase in torque and very little vibrations through the cabinet. When I installed the lower engine mount from prothane (order from gravana), the increase in torque recovered was greatly felt but at the sacrifice of a constant vibration through the entire car! I don't mind the vibrations but sooner or later it will get to me so i'll be saving my oem lower mount in case i want the performance one out.

honestly man, it's best to have both. there have been many discussions about which create more vibrations (meaning engine held in place better). and neither of them individually do a better job, it's mostly the pair of them together that make the difference. the upper mount is an INSERT made of polyurethane that fits inside the stock mount, the lower mount is a solid dogbone mount, with a firmer bushing, which is what creates the stiffness. the only other thing you could do for a bottom mount is have a custom dogbone mount made with a metal bushing... but i don't think you'd want that. i'm an automatic and my car vibrates much worse than most of the manuals

What he said.

And for the record RSM is a very good company that makes great products.

Like Spotabee said, you should replace both. If you can't afford to do both at the same time, get the lower first, than the upper.

god i hope so. i'm installing my RK crank pulley this weekend, i hope that takes some of the vibes away. it gets old to have my steering wheel and dash vibrating at stoplights.

btw the mark pain mounts with softer bushings... don't do as much. softer bushings = less vibrations = not solid mount. why pay?

the softer bushings my be a good idea but they dont last as long. i know a guy who has a lower mount on his 2.4 from MP and the bushings are all gone
