Head Rebuild
Friday, April 22, 2005 2:42 PM
Just wanting some opinions on rebuilding a 2.2 (non-eco) head. My plan was to get the one out of the junkyard (hopefully for cheap) and port n polish it myself. I have a dremel and have been doing alot of research on it. It really doesnt look that hard. Should I buy Perf. Rockers for it, are they a noticble differance/ worth the money? Springs also.. what about them? any perticular brand names that arent to to expensive. Cause Like most.. Im not rich. Then if I get it all done I will prob end up putting it on my car, if not sell it on here or ebay.

the most noticable things u can do will probably be the port and polish yourself($40 abrasive kit) , and some 1.6 rocker rollers($150 -200), springs, their nice for reliability, and on something where u might go past redline, or be in redline a lot. You can get new stronger pushrods for about $80. if u get stiffer springs, get the stronger pushrods too. a 3 angle valve job would be good, depending on the local shops, could be around $80 or so. Thats how much mine was. Karo has larger valves if you want to get those too, 1mm larger, and the machine show can re-do the valve seat for you when they do the 3 angle valve job. karo's valves are $100, (www.carcustoms.net)

the port and polish will be good. and the rocker rollers. those are probably the most bang for the buck. Also, port match the intake manifold. to the intake runners on the head.

VTLoki hit the nail on the head!

If you go with the roller rockers, you can surface the head past the 0.010" max recomendation for a slight increase in compression ratio. Costs about $40. Some will say not worth the work or money, but it is when it's combind with the other mods to take full advantage of those mods and the typical bolt ons.

i'm quite happy with my 1.6 roller rockers. the comp cams springs, valve locks, and retainers are all a great pair if you plan on high horsepower. if you'd like the numbers on those i can get them for you.
