Has anyone attempted to make a homemade header? How did it work?

Well I kinda did, i bought the RK poop 4-2-1 header. About a month after doing the install the gasket where the top half and the bottom half go together went out. I changed it and it went out again even quicker than the first time. This battle of takin my heaader off every couple of weeks got old real fast. I delt with it for about a year and then got pi$$ed riped the header out cut it to pieces and started weldin it back together in a way that it would fit and not hve to be in 2 pieces to get it back in the car. So i kind of made my own header just with RK Sport pieces. I also made a header for my I4 Honda motoer. Just took a piece of 1/4" X 4" X 12" piece of mild steel traced tha gasket onto it then cut it out wa la header flange. bought some pieces of 1 3/8" mandrell bends out of Jeg's and started cuttin and weldin, just try to keep all of the runners the same length, granted its not a "tuned" header but it picked up a decent ammount of power. And oh yeah when I got my Ecotec header re-done it didnt loose any power that i could tell on the bottom end and on the top end it seemed to help out some but realy cant tell unless i would have dynoed the car before and after the birth of the frankenstien header.

Bolt the flange down to a steel plate before welding up the tubing. When finished welding, keep the finished header bolted down and, heat the flange/tube weld area to almost cherry red and allow to air cool to relieve stresses and warping from the heat of welding.
I'm also interested in seeing pics of home made or modified headers.

I was going to cut the header at the flange and reweld all new tubing from the header to the muffler. With the resinator and cat of course. Just didn't want to do my car more harm than good. Plus it would be cool to mention you custom made the header.

I just may go with the Pace Setter for now. I heard the painted one only peels is because the paint is only shipping paint. It is recommended that you strip and either paint with a Hi-Temp paint or leave like it is.

It was originalya RK Sport ceramic coated header. When i welded it back together i had to grind off the cating to get a good weld, i used the paint to cover the bear weld the paint is flakin off of the coated part but it is actually stickin to the welded parts pretty good. Its just now startin to get warm here and i haven detailed the engine sincelast fall., when i do that i will get rid of the flaked off paint that hasnt fell off yet.

I still want to design and fabricate my own header. I can weld really good but I don't have a bender so i'd have to do a lot of cutting and fabbing. I could take the pipes down to a local muffler shop and have them bend it for me. Like I said I will probaly go with the Pace Setter one for now and use the stock as a template. I am also looking at some TBs and a full exhaust system. I already have a modified CAI with the cone right behind the cooling fan.
