resonator restriction
Monday, April 18, 2005 3:26 AM
Well Im planning on doing my exhaust over the summer going with a complete header back system. I know using a straight thru style muffler its gonna be raspy and everything. well I was talking to my buddy about it and i was gonna get a magnaflow resonator and he keeps saying that i might as well keep my exhaust system cause the resonator is gonna be restrictive. I keep telling him that it wont be but hes arguing with me that it will be. I just wanna know if the resonator is gonna be restrictive cause i want a good flowing exhaust but i dont want to have to panic everytime i get near or see a cop. Ive done a few searches and didnt get any info that would help me. If there is something on t he topic i must of missed it so plz dont flame me on it since i usually search really well before asking something.

if the resonator is straight through, it can't be restrictive, just get it the same size as your exhaust and your all set, no restriction, i think its called a perforated core resonator

hey if your willing to sound like a weed wacker and be laughed at for 1hp be my guest, dynoed 136/138 at the 03 bash with an intake, 62mm TB, and from the stock cat back straight pipe with no reasonator and a dynomax ultra flow muffler.

Since then ive added weapon R header,Magnaflow cat, magnaflow resonator, crank pulley, and 8lb flywheel. With those extras I picked up 10 horse and 10 torque, so really it makes no difference. Ive picked up maybe 20hp over stock with the 1500 + worth of junk. Modding an NA car is kind of a waste as you can see

basically what im looking at is getting a header back system with 2.5 inch piping cause im going to be getting the gm supercharger installed and want the extra flow.

Hey man.....i've got the charger and just got a header back exhaust.....i'm using pacesetter headers, catco high flow cat, 2.5" pipping, no resonator and a carbon fiber str8 thru muffler.....loud as hell and raspy as hell....planning on puttin a cat on in the future...but as long as you driving normally and shifting at around 3 grand...you'll be fine.

i have the isuzuperformance.com header and high flow cat. for a cat back i have a resonator(2.5inch dynomax glass pack) in my piping and a 2.5inch dynomax muffler to a stock looking tip . It sounds good i think(compared to what i heard). I also have the s/c and a bunch of other mods.

Where u from in wisconsin? near milwaukee? maybe we can hook up and i let u see how ithe car sounds

I'm the friend S_charged is talking about. I just signed up today Anywho, on any car, 4, 6, 8, 10 whatever cylinder, cars are quieted down by using a negative form of restriction, whether it be a catalytic converter, resonator, muffler, or all 3. Think of it like this, you run a car without cats but you have mufflers, sounds kinda cool, not so restrictive. You run a car with only cats and no mufflers, also sounds cool, but its louder because it has less restriction then a muffler (stock muffler). Resonators can take the place of mufflers on certain kinds of cars. My mothers car has a resonator and muffler setup and its very restrictive. So the bottom line here... resonator quiets a car down using internal diagonal baffling sometimes similar to a glasspack, a muffler has all sorts of baffles, so why would you want to use both, especially on a 4 cylinder? If you get the right muffler curt, you won't have to worry about raspiness, but then again why listen to me, what do I know, I only have 8 cylinders.
