Ok, so since I don't have the $$$, the expertise, or the tools to buy a REAL intake from some place like AEM or something, I decided to ghetto rig my own. So, what I did, is I took out the stock air box, then I took a hacksaw, and hacked off the arm up to the part of the intake tube where it has the ripples in the rubber. I then clamped my cone filter down on that, and viola. I also put on a breather cone filter in place of the stock tube that just connects to the 2200 box. Viola..
Now, the upsides I see to this are: Increased performance, Increased Fuel Efficiency, and a cooler running engine.
My dad, on the other hand, thinks otherwise. He says that I now have to get my computer reprogrammed, because apparently since the car is running on slightly less fuel, it's running 'lean' and that creates heat. Apparently he thinks I'm going to warp my headers or cylinders, or something crazy like that. Now, my question to all of you, is what truth does any of this hold? Am I really going to burn up my engine just by adding this little stuff?
your dad is wrong, it won't hurt a thing... i'd like to see pics of this... and did you say you put a breather on the nipple coming off your valve cover? in place of the elbow tubr going into your "2200 air box" ontop of the valve cover? if so, i hope you pluged the hole on the airbox, so it isn't sucking unfiltered air in there. i explaned this as best i could in lamens terms...
I have to find a way to plug up the hole, for now it's bare and yes, I know that's bad for it. I'll post pictures of this as soon as I get my friggin digital camera back!
yeah fortunately our computers are able to tell that the engine is getting more air then it normaly does and adjust the fuel acordingly. you could completly remove the entire airfilter asembly and just have a open throttle body and your car wouldnt run lean. however your engine would suck in all kinds of dirt and ruin your engine after a period of time.

lol hm.. u can get an intake off ebay for like 40.00 shipped i got a cosmo racing one.. perfect fit everything is perfect on it next to aem.. it was oonly like 60.00 dont risk all the other bull@!#$ with clamps n such.. although i have heard a rubber tube is better then an aluminum one because it doesnt get as hot but w/e i still like the sound
The rubber ones got all the ridges n @!#$ so that somewhat cripples intake.
Did you by chance take off your stock tube? there is a plastic tibe inside that rubber tuber where it connects to the 2200 box. If you didnt take that out yet you havent helped your intake at all.
As for not having money.... I got a spectra brand 3" aluminum tube and a spectra cotton cone filter for a total of $25 at AutoZone.
Pics in link under sig.

Interesting...
No, I haven't pulled any sort of tube out of my rubber tube connecting to my 2200 box. I will have to investigate this, batman.
I also took the breather filter off. Mainly because I didn't notice any performance gain. So, I couldn't justify keeping it on there. So I put the stock tube back on.
...Batman...?
Anyways... about your breather filter... IF you even notice a performance gain, you will notice it with the tube on. As it sucks up oil fumes into your air intake, that can then be burned.

but with the hose on you slowly get buildup in your intake which will hinder the airflow.
check out the classifieds too. i got my weapon-r dragon intake with 2 filters and a breather filter for $50 total.

isnt the motor running a few degrees warmer if your sucking under hood air. as to where it was in the fender.
No, because when the car is moving, air from outside is moving around in the engine. Th heat from the engine doesnt STAY under the hood like it's being held there. And besides, I'd rather have a air comming in freely from that intake, rather than a hole in the fender barely big enough to shove a dime through.
And yes, sandstorm.... Batman. It just sounded cool at the time. =) Btw, I saw the pictures of your intake, and you did a VERY nice job, it looks great!
i opened up the hole and fit a 2.5" pipe in mine.

Thank you.
So, did you find and get that plastic tube out of the stock tube/2200 box junction?

The tube is, yes. The whole coming out of the first airbox is, yes. But by the time the air gets from fender to airbox, it goes through your airbing, which does get really REALLY small because of emisions.
This is why our cars have air boxes. If the engine was always forced to get all its air throuh a one inch hole, it would die. The air boxes store air that could be sucked at a higher rate when the engine needs it.

Yes, I finally got that damn tube out. We'll see how much of a difference it makes shortly.

I tell you guys what. the hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake is there for a reason. it removes crankcase pressure making for a better ring seal. Hot rodders even run old vacuum pumps to pull even more of the crank case pressure/ring blow by out. i even remember hotrod magazine did an article on vacuum pumps in the mid 90's on a small block Chev and the pump made a extra 15 horse power
as far as build up i have noticed that synthetic oil does not build up hardly at all compared to dyno oil run cars.
see ya!
So your saying by having that hose attached, it doesnt jsut let oil fumes escape, but it actually sucks them out (to an extent)??
