Header Question
Monday, April 04, 2005 6:13 PM
My birthday is coming up and i want to get a header for my 2001 2.4 cavy.
What are the best headers around for a good price. Also what kinda HP will i gain if i have an AEM intake and 3.O" catback exhaust....Or, is there something else i should get insted of the header. Thanks.

3" catback is way TOOO huge for an N/A car, 2.25 is probably the biggest I'd go. Other than that, a good 4-1 will probably do nice.

i recommend the DC Sports 4-2-1 header + 2.25" catback.

I just installed a 4-2-1 RK sport header on my 01 sunfire with the 2.4L engine and i love it... looks soo nice in the engine bay the way it sticks up.. kind of like a turbo manifold style to it... i got pics if you want too..

uhhhhhh... turbo manifolds are log manifolds not header-style manifolds.

Apparently you forgot about equal length turbo manifolds

ya, freebs, if you could send pics. Also, did it include the downpipe and was it an easy install?

Re: Header Question

it came with every thing to attach it to the stock exhaust... but i do suggest getting one welded on as you might get some exhaust leaks and it does not sound the best... sounds a lot nicer when every thing is welded up. As for install it is kind of a bitch if you haven't done it before since its a lot bigger then the stock part..
check out this post... i have all the pictures from when i was putting it on and when it was in (ahah my engine bay was really dirty at the time but oh well)
RK sport header pictures

And let me know if you are getting this header, as i will be more then happy to write out full instructions on what to do as the ones they give you skip a lot of things that could make the install easier... it took me a few hours and i suggest having 2 people as one will need to pry the engine forward (not as bad or as hard as it sounds trust me) while the other person slids the 1st part in place.

Thanks Freebs, that post is awsome and thanks for the offer for the install guide. I will begetting it sometime in Just so i will take your offer on that. How much did you pay for the header, also did you have any problem with the car throwing codes.

I payed like $610 CDN... or something like that (after all the shipping and taxes ect..) i bought it from Gravana Tuning, I would say get it from there, Jim is a great guy to deal with. As for it throwing codes.. it didn't for a week, then all of a sudden i was cruising home going 100kph. with Cruz control on not really bagging it at all then all of a sudden the check engine light went on, so i will find out what it is about and let you know hopefully before you buy your header but it hasn't changed the way my car runs. And ill give you my email / msn so you can email me or what ever and ask me for the info on it.

WIll be getting this header too..again.. possibly.

I would imagine the code is from the an O2 sensor.
Even with the 4-1 headers out there, them O2 deals tend to lead to headache if not done properly.
That is, you me need a diff sensor then factory I read somewhere.

Did you have to extend the wiring for the sensor?

Yep he is right... my o2 sensor is shot... thats all it is... Also for the 02 sensor wiring all i had to do was take it out of the black cover that holds all the wires in (ahah sorry the name has slipped my mind right now) but once you free if from all the other wires the o2 Sensor is actually pretty long and reached fine.

hey.....think about future plans......go 4-1 shorty headers if you plan on n/a or supercharging........if you plan on turbocharging it, get the 4-2-1 headers with the s-bend (check out rk sport).....so first decide that.......when your engine light comes on after exhaust mods....9/10 times....its the o2 sensors........if you don't want any future probs...and dont mind droppin a little extra $$$.....get a set of o2 SIMULATORS.....i bought a obx racing 4-1 header (plan on supercharging this summer), high flow cat...2 1/4" piping, dual cat back exhaust, with the 4" oval tips....and the set of simulators....everything is going at once...with a weapon r intake....the only part of the exhaust system not upgraded is the resonator....but not too sure if im gonna swap it too........as well evrything is goin on in two weeks.....i'll post how things went and any probs that might or might not occur....ne ways good luck with whatever it is you do.....

You should only run a simulator on the 2nd O2 sensor (emmisions), as the car uses the 1st one to adjust A/F levels in open loop mode (low loads).

Whoa, 3" exhaust... I wonder what that sounds like without a turbo...
Whomever told you to get a 3" exhaust system probably has some sort of secret vendetta against you. Go 2.25" N/A, man. Anything much bigger isn't good unless you're spraying.

i'd say def. go 2.25, i have 2.5 on my cavy and i'm kinda regretting it, however, i do have more plans for the car.
