2200 camshaft

I don't want to do a total rebuild of the motor and I don't want to do any serious fuel mods to it either. However, I saw that the peeps at jbodyperformance made a cam that was inexpensive, decent power increase, and wouldn't require fuel mods either. My question is, how hard is it to put in the camshaft in the 2200 engine? Since it was OHV, I'm figuring it is not a walk in the park. How much have people charged you to put it in?

You will most likely have to remove the block to replace

And JBP is NOT cheap, I got my cam done by Comp Cams for 130, quite a bit cheaper

What kind of gains did you notice?? ^^^ be realistic too please.

Well, when I had it in my hands it felt like it was worth about 25hp

But seriously, I will never be able to tell you b/c it was custom turbo grind for my turbo motor that will be done within the next week or so

Look at my profile

Really? I'll have to check out the comp cams site then. I'm just looking for a mild street upgrade. Nothing too serious, just enough to squeeze a little more power out of the engine.

You have to send a stock or blank cam in though

They don't sell them outright

But its still better b/c you have to send a core back to JBP anyway

Nice. I can prob. pick up a blank for pretty cheap. How long does it take for them to do the work and send it back??

It took them about 3 or 4 weeks to do mine

But that was b/c there profiler was done for 2 weeks and they were backed up

It should only take 1-2 weeks to do

I have the 2.2L and I had Crane Cams regrind mine. They can do the 2200 cams also. Just call Crane's Tech line and ask for Dave Maxwell. He'll ask you about what you want to do with the car and what mods you have done and plan on doing. Be honst and he'll steer you in the right direction. It cost me about $130 and took less than a week, but I live about 60 miles from them. Comp's Cam Help Line can do the same thing, it's all a matter of who you prefer.

^ thats what im looking at doing

Well you have to remove the head to be able to remove the lifters, and then unbolt the motor mounts and drop the engine down to pull the cam, and even then i think it would be a major PITA, would be much easier to just yank the engine out and put it on a stand, oh and youll also have to drop down the oil pan so the timing cover can be remvoved.

Don't forget about replacing the bearings too

B/c if you don't you WILL regret it

Re: 2200 camshaft

you dont have to replace the cam bearings... ive rebuilt numerous motors mostly v8 and never replaced cam bearings.. crank bearing ? yeah every time but not cam bearings... and al those motors are still good to go...

not to thread jack but...

if you install an aftermarket cam is there anything else you need to do besides swaping the cam.. ie reflash??

It would depend on how lopy the cam would run, the stock computer should be able to run a mild cam just fine

I have been told that a stock computer can run a mild or street/strip cam just fine. I ll bet it would run a turbo cam just fine too. I am actually looking at the turbo scene so might get the turbo cam. Never heard of anyone actually having problems with computer and all that goodness.

The JBP Stage II cam has a similar profile to the Crane regrind that I have with the 1.6:1 rockers. This combo that I have causes a slight to moderate lope to the idle, but doesn't affect the PCM in any way, even with the extra mods that I've done. I doubt you would have any problems other than a slight lope to the idle.
