What the best intake for the buck?
Monday, April 10, 2006 1:49 PM
Ok guys, I need your opinion. I have had a cone filter on my cavalier (04) and need an actual intake. The pickup sux from idle to about 3k. then the motor comes alive!
I have good off-idle grunt but it bogs if I stomp it. I guess I'm used to my subaru. I have built several intakes on my own, some work, but dont last (heat ducting-due to motor movement) and some dont (cone filter on the black box). So I need to upgrade. I need an opinion from the ones that would know, which is the best for the money? Please remember I need low end torque for auto-x. I have to keep it in lower gears to get it to run halfway decent. I guess I just need to build the motor....

For the price you can't go wrong w/ an ebay intake. I've bought several different ones for different cars over the years and for the price have never been disappointed.

Ebay with K&n Filter .... installing an intake is not going to do much for gaining or loosing torque .

what you need to think about is the future of modding your car. The weapon r or any cobra head intake will not be good for a boosted car belive me I had the weapon r and had get the rksport. And most people have seen what the weapon r did to my car. I continued to have the cobra head blow off the throttle body and hit the carbon fiber hood. Also the evo hood had a hard time shutting with the weapon r. I had to take out the tray in the hood to shut it.

so I would go with either the rksport or any other none cobra head intakes.
but as far as power gain there is very little difference.

Yes, there isnt much power difference now. I know why, I'm too lazy or broke to do something about it. But for now the cone on the black box is gonna have to do. it does have ample torque but bogs a little when I stomp it, give it a sec and then it flies!

dont forget to decide on warm(short-still in the engine bay) or cold (long-in the fender wall)air intake

Actually what I ended up doing is taking the factory ducting, installed it back on the car.
Installed my K&N cone filter on the end of the ducting and reset the computer. This car runs GOOD now!!! Dayum!!

Well you should have said that. Cause most all of us have done the ghetto mods to a car and could have let u know. But you said best intake. You did a add-a-filter mod!

I have to say over the years I still don't think the AEM beats out the RSM one, but bang for your buck is ebay intakes. Just remember we all know you when cheap when we see it. Also I thought I would tell you to get some soild engine mounts to help with that movement.

All these different brand intakes hardly make a difference in performance, if any at all. Your biggest gain if u get any is from the filter, being able to breath more, which then again is hardly a big difference. Intakes are more about dressing up the engine bay, and if u put your mind to it you could craft you're own and make it look pretty good.

I agree with Danny; I put the AEM CAI on my car because it looks nice and it sounds bad ass. Only draw back is that it cost about 225 bucks. You will notice a little gain but not much.

On N/A cars you notice more power increase that a turbo. But will notice the most out of it with other breather mods added with it.....

Actually with a turbo, and in essence that being a restriction against ur air intake, getting an intake that can allow the turbo to breath/ spoil faster would make a much greater difference over a car w/o one.

Back to the subject, you can look around at your local auto parts store and see what you can make fit with some adapters/ fittings and piping. Or check out Ebay got lots of good stuff for do it your self.

not if the intake pipe that you got would continue to blow off the throttlebody. Then a better intake would be a tremendous increase in power. ie no loss of boost.
