What compression should my 1995 2.3 Quad 4 LO be running, and does the chip I have in there affect it at all?
The compression should be 9.5 to 1 if its a low compression engine and the chip will have no effect on the compression.
I don't mean THAT kind of compression... I mean cylender compression... like taking off the IDI cover, removing spark plugs, and putting on the compression tester,... that kind of compression.
I found the compression RATIO... just need the recommended cylender compression...
thanks anyway though....
so anyone know???
a healthy Quad4 will read somewhere between 170-190psi. if its below 160psi, you have sealing issues.
hope this helps
Anywhere between 150-200psi is normal. (varies with compression ratio...10:1 = 170-200).
A general rule of thumb is 17-20 times the CR.
As long as there is no more than a 10-15% variance between each cylinder your good.
Any less than 100 psi in any cylinder and its rebuild time.

Alright cool...
So the compression ratings I got were 195-200 on cyl 4, 175 on cyl 3, and 180 on cyl 1 and 2.... so everything is fine then?
Going by Nytemare's formula, the optimal range would be 161.5 - 190 lbs @ 9.5:1 compression.
The #4 cyl seems just a tad high, but might have just been a fluke...
It all looks good to me.
yeah...like I said though...its just a rule of thumb...only an estimate...as long as its not like more than 200 or like 150 or less...it should be fine.
It looks like a new engine reading almost.
the Lo engine had 9.5:1 as a ratio and 175 of compression on the tester. Use some sea foam cause it seems you have alot of carbon build up in the combustion chamber.
The Ho as about 215 of compression.
No if you have rebuild the engine, the compression can be higher or is you used a thinner head gasket. Like my 2.3 has 9.5:1 compression pistons in it(in stock form) but with the .030 over it get about 9.63:1 with is about 190-195.
So yes the engine is fine but dirty like hell.

2.3 Ho
Nikki !!! I told you your engine was fine !! Geez !! Oh and BTW I just thought of what could account for your lower readings on the couple cylinders. Your car sat for a couple weeks right ? Then the cylinders were whats known as "dry". When I had you start it up to make sure it would still crank for me to do the test it was probly just long enough to give the cylinders and rings just a thin coat of oil that would explain the lower readings. If you want to we can re-do the test now that the engine has run for a while.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
Hey BTW, have you cleaned your engine yet ?

dirty? that quad better not bet dirty?

Dirties not exactly the word I would use. It would more a phrase containing words such as "My God" "filthy" "Exxon Valdeez" "Environmental catastrophy" "Iraq under the hood"
You know stuff like that.
I'm only kidding Nikki !
But it is bad.

Jackalope> Until you came up and did the compression check, the car sat since December 23rd when that hose blew. I just wanted to know what the average compression range was supposed to be, that's all.
The car itself, sat for 2 years before I bought it in April of 03. I used the Seafoam spray stuff in the summer of 04, sprayed it into the brake booster vaccuum line and blew out a helluva lot of smoke, and sometime after that (I think it was early last year) a mechanic had added some liquid seafoam to my oil, and let that run through until the oil was changed again.
So should I do another round of Seafoam? Brake booster line? How do I do that again properly?
well..just my 2cent but...id take a weekend and stick that HO in there and stop letting it collect dust

Just change your oil and it should be fine. As for it being
dirty just kep cleaning it.

I don't think changin the oil is a problem.. the amount of oil that she's been dumpin in to replace "Valdez: Resurrection" should keep it pretty clean...
j/k

LOL I'd love to if I had the money to get some parts to rebuild it at the moment lol.

Very funny there Mr....... lol
Glad to hear you got yer car back on the road, though.
