Hi, Im new to here, because i just bought a 1989 turbo sunbird. It ' s a fixer upper.
My idle goes to 3000 rpms to 1900 rpm's.
I just changed my IAC valve and it made it go up to 4000 rpm's.
Should I clean out the inside of where the IAC valve bolts to(it was dirty)?
Is this a problem with my TPS?
Oh yeah, and the turbo does not work, but it runs fine, except for the idle.

Thanks for any help you all can give me.
Check your throttle cable, it may be sticking.
Secondly TPS just senses how far open your TB is. It tells the computer in a voltage signal.

I'll check the throttle cable....
I'm not sure what you mean by the tps senses how far open your TB is.
Should I clean out my throttle body?
the TPS(throttle position sensor) like said just looks at where the throttle is, it reads how open/closed that gate in the throttle body has moved. Usually when it goes bad, you get a blank spot in your throttle response..so in other words, you push the gas then after say 2000rpm it sorta dies then kicks back in at say 2500rpm. It doesn't send a reading or incorrect reading between 2000-2499rpm to the ecu.
I don't know to much about the turbo's 2nd gen sunbirds..but I would deff. clean the throttle body out, take it off and clean it out good. Also check for any missing/broken vacuum hoses to the intake, same with any split intake/throttle body gaskets. Your sensors could be fine, just that your sucking in extra unregistered air after the throttle body.
Also when you put on any new sensor related to engine management, you should always try and reset adaptations..meaning clear the stored setting of the faultly sensor in the ecu...disconnect your battery to do so, now the ecu will have to relearn it's new settings to get the idle back within range.
hope this help...
Ok i have replaced the tps.
IAC sensor works , i tested it at autozone.
Still idles at 4100 rpm's.
Throttle body is clean . I just made an eye exam..infront and behind the throttle blade looks good.
No i appreciate the info edgez24.
I cant find any vacuum leaks .
Maybe ill change the map sensor.
Guess ill get an air/ fuel ratio gauge, too
But did you clean out the area where the little chamber is for the IAC..also don't only check for vacuum hose leaks, make sure there's no faulty gaskets..good old way to check is a small propane tank..you release the propane where you suspect a leak, if there is a leak the rpm will rise. Although to idle at 4000rpm that would be a pretty big leak.
Come to think, maybe the person before you messed with the idle position screw. It's not suposed to be adjusted..but maybe the prior owner didn't know any better

How far is it supposed to be screwed in? .... It has about 1/8 of an inch of threads showing through the top( remember its upside down.)
Yeah, what kinda of driver do you need to remove it?
Just checked my computer for codes...i didnt drive it around i let it run for a minute then turned it off .....i have no radiator fluid in it right now(long story)
the code went something like this: 1-22-----------1-22-----------1-22------------1-22---------- Over and Over...so i think theres no code as of now stored in the computer.
Guess ill bust out the propane..check for some vacuum leaks.
here i just remembered something, found a link for it..it's to learn idle on 2nd gens
Also explains breifly the iac along with the idle screw

It's worth a shot..
