Water Pump!?Q??

hey guys jus wonderin i have a 98 z24 cavalier and i jus took it to the shop got some estimates i'm gettin charged at least 500 bucks for tha labor or w/e cuz its a 9 hour job?? is that the correct price or am i gettin ripped off?????? he talkin bout timing chain of the water pump?. true or false??? i kno its waaaay down there and you gotta take out the engine!!!! but 500bucks?? i dunno and plus i allready have my part!!!!!!whatcha think guys a lil help ?!?! thnx alot!!! warioSpeed*

sounds about right.

GM book time says a little bit more than that....

but I don't think you have to remove the engine.. getting that timing chain cover off though.......

Definetly dont have to drop the engine, its a bit tight but we managed to get 2 cam swaps done , actually we did the second swap in alot less than that 9 hours it was like 5 or 6 hours. A good mechanic could do it in under 6 horus but they still have their dumb little books that dictate how much you pay even if it takes half the time you pay what the dumb books do. Get a new timing chain tensioner and shoe as well because it will save you a labour headache again later.

If I were you I'd get the Haynes manual for around $10-$15
and just follow the steps indicated. I have changed my water
pump three times, It's not hard. You can say yourself some money
and at the same time learn a little about your engine.
A word of advice..."mark everything that you can so that It goes
back together with the correct timing.

a certain local GM tech has them down to 2 hours

thats because they work on them all the time but 2 hours doesnt seem right.

500 bucks isnt that bad from the prices ive seen
