My 96 fire is overheating it is a sedan 2.2

Okay I have checked the:
Waterpump (its fine)
Thermostat (changed its fine)
Heatercore (its fine)
Headgasket (was changed like 3 years ago)
Radiator (is beening checkd now)
Fan is always on

What else could it be...

also I had no coolant in the coolant tank, then sometimes when I fill it up its fine than all of a sudden its empty

fan shouldnt be on all the time.

Check you oil, the coolant has to be going somewhere.

And how specificly are you filling it up with coolant?

Are you doing a 50/50 mix?

Having the same problem...waiting to hear more responses

Have either of you guys burped your systems? There's either an air pocket in your cooling system, or you have a bad head gasket. On my 97 2.2 there's a screw going across the front of the motor on this black tube, you open it up and it'll let out the air.

I don't believe I have a blown head gasket, although, last year my car was in the shop last year for water pump replacement and the guy told me i had a blown gasket and asked if it'd be ok for them to add sealant.

As Lanman says "Burp the system"

Have you tried:-

1. Remove the radiator cap and the expasion tank cap.

2.Run engine until the thermostat opens and you can see movement of the coolant and I hope, air bubbles coming out.

3.Top up the radiator as necessary until no more air escapes.

4. Refit radiator cap

5.Make sure you have some coolant in the expansion tank

6.Adjust the coolant level to the cold mark on the expansion tank when the engine is cold.

This is how I bleed my 93's

Continuous air bubbles could be head/head gasket troubles.

Hope this helps

could be a cracked rad, get your coolant system pressure tested, best way to find out

My favorite Topic
WOOHOOOOO!!

First I would do a 15PSI pressure test and see if it holds pressure.
if it does and you find no leaks, check the following,

Air Pockets,
Coolant container is empty.
That right there might be the problem.
1. You might have an air pocket, so keep filling it until it gets full at all times.
(drive it, let it sit and fill it up as many times until it gets full)

Radiator,
1. Make sure the Radiator is hot on both sides.
Whe the Temperature gets up to 195F-200F degrees,
open the hood and try to feel the Radiator on both sides.
How hot? REALLY HOT!!!! LOL not just warm.
Don't let anyone tell you that it comes in hot and comes back out cold.
that's bull@!#$, both sides most be hot. one side hot, another side cold means
its clugged up, and radiator MOST be replaced.
2. Did you add sealant stop leak?
That stuff might seal your headleak, but will also seal the radiator lol
its almost impossible to remove or flush.

Waterpump,
When they leak, they're bad.
just keep adding coolant 50/50 mix and see what happens.

Thermostat,
1. The thermostat's spring should be facing the motor.
Take it out and test the sun of a gun, there's always that chance to get a bad one. it happens all the time
2. you can't check the thermostat unless the system is full, or if the radiator is clugged up.

Fan is always on.
That means your car is running hot at all times.
something is not letting the cooling system circlute.
Air pockets, radiator cluggled up thanks to stop leak sealing @!#$, low coolant, waterpump leaking, headgasket internal leak anything.

Head Gasket.
Check the oil, if it looks like Coffee with Cream. you have a leak.
if your car is not smoking white smoke, you don't have a blown head.
A 15psi pressure test can help you find the leak; if you have one.

Heatercore.
if you have heat, your heater core is fine.

hmm thanks for the respones ok no white smoke and also I have had the head gasket changed like 2-3 years ago. Radiator was flushed yesterday and is bening installed now. I will tell my mechanic to take out the thermostat and drive it around see if the coolant flows then, it may be a bad thermostat last time I changed it I went through 4 of them until I got a good one.

I hope its the thermostat or radiator. I cant think of anything else.

also did the pressure test and mechanic said that was fine.

Check your hoses!!

I'm having this same problem (not overheating, but loss of coolant) on my Toyota beater truck. Puzzling problem it is.

radiator checked and flushed, mechanic also told me now the fan is not running all the time now but does take a long time to come on.

Now temp guage goes up just below the yellow then goes back down to the half way mark then a few minutes later the temp guage started climbing back up and the coolant light came on again.

WTF? could it be.....

oh yeah all hoses are good

ok no more overheating but the that light with the wavy lines and arrow pointing down is on but it does not overheat.

So I drove all the way home and in traffic it went up to just about the white line then went back down once the fan kicked in, Is that normal for it to get that hi or warm/hot?

Ok also once I got it home and it sat for about two or three hours I checked the coolant resevoir was kind of low, about 5 mintues of running I cut it off and saw the coolant raised a little so I just added a little more.

speaking of overheating today I just had the same problem.

I was on the highway, got off the exit and then the temperature started to go up up up
after the traffic light turned green and started moving it kinda went down a little bit
I had the heat on, and when it was overheating I had NO HEAT.

I was like..uhmmm my car is trying to play tricks on me again.

I'd let it sit for a little bit, got me a gallon of 100%Dex-Cool because it lost some when I turned the car off. I drove it and it was fine, but then it wanted to overheat and it didn't have much eat coming from the AC vents, and I think its because the system wasn't full and I probably had an air pocket.

The radiator was cold, but that's because the cooling system wasn't circulating.

here's what I did before the big mess:
I added water with a little bit of Dex.
I think I messed up the Coolant Mix and created an air pocket.
during hot weather it might be okay to just have water in the system, but when its cold its not good because it freezes.

I also think that I need to replace the water outlet neck plastic thing because it was leaking when it was hot.

The fan comes on at about 230F-240F I think our cars wait too long for the fan to kick on.
10 degrees more and you're overheating.
I think the fan should come on at about 210F

Pins,
Keep adding coolant everytime its low or else your car overheats.
sooner or later you will find the cause, but in the mean time keep filling it.
right now I'm adding 100%Dexcool because there's too much water in system and I want to have 70% coolant, and 30% Water.
