I don't know if this is something to be concerned about [that is to say I don't know if this is normal] however, out of the blue I started hearing a very faint whistling nose coming from the engine. I went to find it, but there was just too much going on and the noise was too faint. So I made a stethoscope and pinpointed the sound to my power steering reservoir. To be more specific, air is being drawn in from around the cap. When I took the cap off, the noise grew considerably louder to the point where it was creating an actual whistle.
Is this normal, or is something in need of repair?
Thanks in advance,
ryan
Was there any fluid in there when you check'd it? If there was'nt then fill it up and check for leak's from the housing and line's. That should help you in determaing what's wrong.
It has the correct amount of fluid in it...
what else could it be?
Does this whistle increase with engine RPM??
Is it hard to turn? It could be the pump it self is going out. There should'nt be any sound's comming out of it. Either take it to a mechanic or just go get another pump and do it your self.
Mine forms a vacuum while running so that when I take the cap off it does suck some air in. Maybe the gasket on your cap is bad. Take it out, put a couple cut out rings from a plastic milk jug in to tkae up some space, reverse the gasket and reinsert. Put the cap back on and if the problem goes away you may just have to replace the gasket.

Godda bring this back. my car almost sounds like it is growling or purring really loud when i turn the steering wheel when I'm not moving fast. i checked my power steering fluid this morning and it was foamy, just full of bubbles. any ideas??
Maybe a leak in the suction line allowing air to be sucked in. The air shuld purge itself eventually. If it doesn't or hasn't, could be the leak in the suction line.
Another thought, are you sure it has PS fluid in it? Maybe someone before you put in another fluid without antifoaming agents.
