Oil Change Disaster
Monday, November 07, 2005 4:19 PM
Here's a not so funny story....

Right now I'm at my part time job in the mall... I decided to take my car to Sears for an oil change. I've taken it to them before so I figure they're cool... Well, while I'm sitting here doing nothing I get a phone call. It's Sears & they say they're having a problem with my car!!

Well, the lady explained to me that while trying to remove my oil filter cap they broke half of the top off. Soooooo when they put it back on oil skeets all over the place. Of course it's about 7:30 so the dealerships are closed & I can't get a new cap... The guy says "You're stranded!!" He meant for it to be a joke but I think I forgot to laugh...
So now here I am like a bum calling around trying to find a ride.... I gotta start changing my own oil....

Sounds like Sears needs to cough up a rental

Lifes too short to drink cheap beer.

Those bastards said they couldn't get a rental. I didn't even feel like arguing b/c I have a ride it's just the PRINCIPLE!!!!!

Tell them they owe you some free servicing or something.

That oil change and next oil change should be free. Don't give them a dime.

yeah it sucks but you guys are attacking the place liek they messed up the car... parts brake its gonna happen, its kinda hard to do somethign wrong to brake it..... @!#$ I've bone PDI's at work where I had to top off th eoil before the car gets sold and cap broke in half taking it off for the first time. The part is plastic eventually plstic that is exposed to both extremes in terms of temp plus oil is gonna go bad.

I remeber working on a customers car cause there was a poping noise when turning, it was bad strut mount on one side and the other was really worn, I replaced the one side fine the second side had a metal bushing that was frozen to the strut itself, we told the guy and he was all pissed off cause we didn't tell him up front thet he needed to buy a strut and blah blah, he didn't want it so I just put it back together with the new one, couple weeks later he was back and pissed off because the car was makign the noise still blah blah blah..... @!#$ happens doesn't mean the shop @!#$ up

This is actually a pretty common problem. I can't tell you how many times outside shops called looking for those oil caps for the ECO. And the problem is actually the shops, they torque em down way too tight. Those caps literaly just need to be snug, that's it. Any more and they break. It's plastic for gods sake, not metal. It's just another reason to do maintenance yourself. Oil changes are especially easy on the ECO.

Yep. I got my baby back now though!! I took them 2 days b/c the dealership had to order the cap. Sears discounted me 50% percent though so all I basically paid for was the oil....
I was really cooperative with them though b/c like Darkstars said if it was gonna break it was gonna break b/c it's just plastic... I'm going to try to do it myself from now on though... Which brings me to this question:

What do I need to take off that oil filter cap? Any kind of special tool or just the appropriate socket & extension...?

i forget the size, but you can buy that at Autozone, we use the socket and a speed handle at Jiffy Lube where i work. (BTW, we've changed oil in tons of ECOTEC motors, none to date have broken caps, must be Sears....)

boy i love GM and their stupid designs. what was wrong with the previous engine's oil filter setup?seems like it was less of a hassle to me. probably a way for the dealership to try suckering people into letting them change their oild.

GO PATS!!!

That's what I think... It's a conspiracy!! The lady in Sears said Autozone didn't have any... Then she checked Advanced & they said they had it but when she went & got it it didn't fit!!!

there is a couple things that work... a 24? mm wrench will fit, its tight but it will fit. You can use a pair of chanel locks on it (not recomended though hahaha). I actually have a socket from Mac or Matco that is specifically for the Eco oil filter housing

That's what I think I need b/c I don't want to strip the cap badly...
Re: Oil Change Disaster

actually it's a 33mm socket... not 24

Hey the lady in Sears told me some junk about the places are gonna start increasing oil change prices b/c they've had problems with those caps. She told me that they are gonna start packaging the filter & cap together so it would make the cost for future oil changes higher b/c you would get a new cap & new filter everytime... Anyone know anything about this?

pure BS, like i said above, we have no issues with caps on ECOTECs... the filter (Fram # 9018) doesnt cost any different for us. Id start investing in changing your own oil, this way you can guarentee that its done right, and its cheaper.

No doubt I will be changing my own oil from now on & thanks for the info my friend!! It's nice to get feedback from someone on the "inside"...

you shouldnt hav epaid a dime you went 2 days without yoru car because of there incompetince i woudl of made a huge sceene in that plac eif they did that with my car. and the oil filter on top makes it much easier to do i hate reaching under my car to get at mine.

The reason it broke is because of 2 things 1 whoever did it last over tightened it or they over tightened it this time. They are plastic but they do last as long as King Kong isn't the one doing it.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

All I'd ask for is a replacement part, and for the oil change to be discounted, because as you said you were able to get a ride, so it didn't cause you pain and suffering.

Things break, life goes on. My guess is there tryed to do it with a pair of vice grips instead of a socket and squeezed too tight.

BTW I use a 32mm socket and a 1/2 inch driver with an extender to get mine off.

ECO oil changes are really simple and really fast. I can do mine in about 10 minutes in my driveway now, but let it sit there to let all the old stuff out.

Start oil Change.

Drink Beer.

Finish Oil Change.

Congradulate self on job well done.

People don't put into perspective that if something brakes it is usually an accident and not the fault of the mechanic.

If you only took your car to one mechanic and he was the only one that ever serviced the car you MIGHT have a reason to be angy if they break something, but most likely it was just the part wearing out.

Stop being so high on getting even, how many of you have screwed up at a job before, or made a mistake, its the same thing here, except it involves a physical part instead of a financial transaction or a coding error etc... Same @!#$ different situation.

He's right you guys. I don't know how to change my own oil yet so wherever I took it it probably was gonna break. All the fussin' & cussin' in the world wouldn't stop that. If I had done that they probably wouldn't have cut me that big ol discount like they did.... Yes I was stranded but that's the dealership's fault b/c the dealership didn't have the part in stock & had to order it... And like I said, the auto parts stores around here didn't carry it...

You want to hear something ironic, my friend took her car to sears to get the oil changed and they broke off the dipstick and if fell down into the oil pan. They said that they wouldnt pay for so i fixed if for her but i told her not to drive it cause it might get kicked up by the crank and then cause damage so they made her get the car towed to her house and didnt pay for crap.
