Not sure what forum to put this in and I didnt a search and found nothing.
98' Cavalier 2200 (steering locks)
Anyway I know I've read alot about the GM steering racks in alot of models simply locking up. Well mine at 110K had these symptoms. It will be fine one day and then I will turn into a turning lane and goto turn back the other way and it locks up, Which to say the least is not cool nor fun.
They were trying to push for a recall for these racks,, but fortunately for GM they rather higher better laywers then spend the money to fix this condition.
I will give credit that atleast the rack made it 110K miles which is considered good,, but atleast if I lost power steering that would be fine but to lock up is not good.
My question is this:
I plan on replacing the rack myself but have seen they offer 2 models.. 1: is sometimes call soft ride suspension/ std steering (FE1) and the other is Sport suspendion/Handling Steering (FE2 & FE3)
My car is a base model which I'm pretty sure has the Std steering rack.. does the other model have a quicker steering ratio?? and would it be interchangeable?
Thanks,
Brad M
If none of the stickers in on your car say wich one it is give the VIN to the dealer and have them look it up.
there is a recall on the rack to replace a bearing for that problem , and depending on the rack it self it may get replaced
the worste part is youll need to pay for a alignmet afterwards
the racks are interchangeble , but the FE2 rack has a loose feeling to it , personally i hate the FE2 rack
