High Pitched noise
Monday, October 24, 2005 5:33 PM
I have a weird problem. Some of time just as I start the car I get a high pitched whine coming from the engine. It is very difficult to pin point cause its so loud. I thought this to be something mechanical but today it did it again, the moment I turned OFF the engine. The noise lasts for about 7 seconds and then stops. Any ideas? I am at a loss as to what this could be. The only recent changes to the engine were the addition of an oil pressure gauge. Its a 2002 Z24 Ecotec Cav. Thanks for any help in advance.

first things first... if its a z24 its not an ecotec 2.2 L . your problem is off of your drivebelt. whether it is due to your alternator, I don't know. have someone start it up while you listen to whats squeeling. while youre at it inspect the underside of the belt for cracks. it is probably coming off of one of the pulleys.

Well since I own the car I can tell you its a Z24 with an Ecotec. If you want pictures I can go to the garage and take em'. I know its a weird combination but it exists. I am in Canada so maybe thats why. As for it being the alternator, how is it making noise with the car off? Same with the pulleys.

I get a High Pitched Noise but it's when I accelerate- Also do you have a Aftermarket Radio? Sometimes the frequencys of the Radio hiss if it's a cheaper radio. Are you sure it's coming from the engine?

try spraying your belt with silicon spray or belt dressing on bloth sides. and i can be an ecotec, didnt make em yet, it prolly a 2200 or a 2.4L Twin Cam (the twin cam looks allot like the 2.2 eco)

The noise comes from the engine compartment and its quieter when I am inside the car. As for it being a Ecotec I will take pictures tonight and post to show you that its a 2002 Eco.

I have a similar problem. When I start the car the sound is there, but once the car warms up the sound is gone. The sound is also gone if I turn the a/c on...is this the same as you?

Hmmm, I haven't tried the ac yet but the noise is gone in like 7 seconds. The moment the car is running, and not just the ignition turned on.

Here are the pics of a 2002 Z24 Eco
