engine bearing out?
Saturday, October 22, 2005 10:25 PM
I put my upper and lower motor mounts in and I noticed a strange noise. It may have not been a result of the mounts but maybe. When I rev the engine in neutral or while driving if I get above 3000 rpms there is a strange noise that comes from the right side of the engine. It gets quieter as the rpms decrease when I let off the gas. Sounds like something isn't rotating right. When I messed with the TB with the hood up I couldn't hear it, I only hear it when in the car. Performance doesn't seem to have suffered. Any ideas would be appreciated.

so it corresponded with installing the mounts? it does sound like it could be the water pump. is it a 5 spd? maybe since installing the mounts, youve tried to see how stiff its gotten by getting on it. if its a 5spd, it could be something like a throwout bearing in the clutch rattling above three grand. what does it sound like, man?

It is a 5 speed. The reason I don't think it is clutch related is that it doesn't matter if I am in neutral and it doesn't matter if I am sitting still or moving. The noise sounds like it could just be from the mounts transferring the sound into the car. I don't think that is the problem, I really think it is something internal but maybe I am just paranoid?

it still may be throwout bearing, if u go in 4th, is it worse?

also, are your engine mounts tight? u may have left a bolt or two lose. when i did a water pump on my mom's 99 cav 2200, i left one engine mount nut loose, and it made a helluva racket

What exactly is a throwout bearing? I'll take the car out in a little and see about 4th.

What up. Ive owned a 2.4L for 2 years. And I ve had the motor rebuilt. After the motor was rebuilt, I had the exact same problem your encountering right now. I can tell you that since the rebuild which was about 7 months ago, and I put 100000km ever since. The problem has not got ten worse, which led me to believe that its normal. My guess is, its not the throwout bearing, because the noise of that bearing is diffrent. And plus I replaced mine professionally, and it still hasnt fixed the problem. My symptoms are exactly the same as yours in that it only happens after 3000 rpm, and you can only hear it when the windows are up. My guess is, is that its the harmonic balancer? I could be wrong but im thinking its gotta be something connected to the crank pulley, because it the sound gets louder by the degree of rpm.

Lets hope we can figure this out, any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

i had the same problem at 2000 rpms. take off the serpentine belt then start the engine and if the noise isnt there, then it is one of the pulleys. For me it was an alternator bolt that was missing, so it made the alternator vibrate at 2k rpms, so I put in a bolt and it was fixed.

Very strange... I might have to start taking stuff apart this weekend. Not looking forward to messing with the belts, they look like a PITA. I'll post any findings. Hopefully someone knows for sure what it is!

mine was rebuilt about 20K miles ago, and mine never made that...and i highly doubt its the harmonic balancer, if it was the engine would shake badly, all the balancer is is a mass of balanced wieght

the throwout bearing is the piece on the shift fork that pushes on the clutch fingers

4th gear doesn't sound any different . the car makes the noise the sounds like a bov after i accelerate hard and let of at 3500 otherwise it sounds like something is rattling around really loud but only from the inside of the car. it also makes the sound more after longer driving periods

The rattling sounds like it is a bearing or something rotationing that is not doing it very smoothly. Sounds like it is from the engine but I can only hear it from inside.
