HELP rubbing noise on wheel =(

hi there..
well since some weeks ago, i noticed that my car makes a kind of rubbing noise on the drivers front wheel, its hard to explain, cuz it sounds like metal rubing with metal like when your brakes sound, but it aint the brakes, it sounds randomly and not when im braking... when i am on a smooth street i can clearly hear something rubbing in the wheel, its not all the time, and when i apply the brakes even a little, the noise is gone.. i cheked the wheel and i noticed nothing strange in the brakes, though, i dont know that much about cars... i was thinking that maybe the sound may come from the axis coming from the transmission to the wheel (dont know how it is called) can someone help me plz? its pretty embarasing leaving out from a place with that noise in the wheel

How old are the brakes?? This is usually the wear indicators on the pads contacting the rotor to let you know the brakes need to be serviced. The noise can change or go away if you hit the brakes or turn the wheel a certain direction. Yank the wheel and see if you can see a mark on the rotor towards the outside of it.

the brakes are almost new, some couple of k's maybe... but i dont think the noise comes from the brakes, cuz it does makes that classic brake noise but this is completely diferent, the pads have still plenty left and the rotors dont seem to have weird scratches, i think the noise comes from somewhere else, that also rotates, dunno, its hard to explain where it comes from cuz it only appears when its moving (not applying the brakes)..

Well i can think of a few things it might be, so here is a list of questions to help me limit the area of suggestion.

1) There is a big cone shaped accordian looking boot thing directly behind the rotors, about dead center. Its the CV joint boot. Is there any cracks, holes, or cuts in it? Are there any grease on the outside of that boot?

2) With that wheel off the ground, and the car supported well, can you yourself, phsyicly move the wheel/tire back and forth in any direction?

3) Carefully check all of the bushings in the front. There are the rubber things at several contact points. Are they in one piece? Any grease coming out of any?

4) When was the last time you had the car lubed?
