(I searched for info, but didn't find much, so here goes. . .)
I purchased a well maintained '99 Cav back in June from a friend. In early August it developed a "clank" in the engine (Sounded like exhaust side). I had to drive it a couple of times, but not far, and the sound got worse. Parked the car and changed the oil. Checked the plugs and a few other odds and ends. Short story is, started to drive the car home from where I had parked it, and the engine seized. Towed it home and drained the oil as part of my prepping to pull out the engine. . .got metal flakes in the oil pan.
I am not a car mechanic, and will have to take the car to a pro. . .any advice what happened and how common engine trouble is?
Thanks.
Spun a bearing maybe? Drop the pan and take a look, see what you can find. If thats the case, either rebuild it yourself or buy a used engine and put it in there.

2 things. . .it sounded like it was the second cylinder from the left (3rd?)
Any particular reason you named a cylinder?
Thanks,
Jim
its a known problemfor the 2.4's, happens all the time lol

Is there any "real" documentation out-there for this, or is it just something that we have learned to accept. . .my '99 has less then 73,000. Hurts to have to have this done.
"Real" documentation? You mean like in writing? I would be more than happy to print this thread off and mail it to you.

Just do a search and you will see how many people have had this happen to their 2.4.
It's not a frequent problem... just that the #3 bearing does spin before any of the others.. it's the thrust bearing which prevents the crank from 'walking'.. ie. like 1st gen DSM's.
It's nowhere near as common as bad head gaskets on the 94-97 2.2L's. Those were almost a guaranteed problem with every S-10 out there. Something like a 50% failure rate.
I've had three 2.4L's... never spun a bearing yet... and I BEAT on my cars.
