My cavalier makes a odd chain rattling noise, both at idle and when driving. I am not for sure does the 2.4 have a timing chain or timing belt? Could it be the timing chain loose??
Any ideas would be great.

Yes you have a chain and its a common problem, I just fixed mine recently. Not something for the novice to do, actually its quite the job but while your in there you may want to consider the follwing parts:

1-Timing Chain
2-Tensioner
3-Tensioner Shoe
4-the 3 plastic guides
5-timing cover gaskets
6-waterpump (if you ahvent already had to tchange it hese things dont last at all)
7- Secret Cams(these are by no means necessary but it really isnt much more labour once your in there doing everything else).

So before I tear it apart how do I know it is the timing chain?
What can I look for?
I am not even sure it is the timing chain that is bad, it just make a noise that sounds like a chain rattling.

chain rattling is exactly what I had the tensioner or guides are bad on mine one of the plastic guides broke in half and was causing the cahin to have a small amount of slack fortunately it never skipped timing. Take it into a shop and get them to listen to the car running any reputable shop should be able to conclude its the timing chain pretty quickly.
