Spark Pulg Boots 2.4L
Monday, August 29, 2005 6:45 PM
Having problems with my spark plug boots on my 98 GT, its almost as if the boots are short or something. Ive tried both putting the boots on the IDI first, like recommended (Which causes a chatter ticking typed sound) and the other way with the boots on the pulg first, (which causes the same thing, but not as bad. I bought new boots thinking it would help, but seems that its about the same. Any ideas on how to get a good connection from the boot to the coil and plug without too much of an air gap?

There is one or two bolt that hold on a hard hose line. Remove the bolt(s) by the back right corner of where the idi cover should go. Then simply push the loosened hose out of the way and you will be able to put the idi cover on. Straight down from the top, lined up. My hose line took a little force to move it over, just don't brake it. Should be able to push it straight on the plugs.

Make sure the boots are connected to the idi cover while doing this. Also normally helps to remove oil cap.

Hope this helps.

I can get it on, but the boots dont seat on the plugs if the boots are attached to the coil first, and they dont attach to the coil if i seat the boots first, when i press down on the IDI cover, its almost as if they smoosh down on top, and dont seat, any ideas there?

Only thing i have is to lean on the cover and make sure all 4 boots are lined up correctly. Then tighten the bolts, and then take the 4 bolts back out, and see if the boots seated properly, u should not be able to put the idi cover off very easy, if it takes some force, repeat and start the car, U WILL KNOW if they are not on right when you start your car.

Not sure what else to do.

That was the issue, when i went to put the boots in, i was easily able to pull the IDI cover off, im betting they arent lined up properly. Im gonna look at it later, maybe i can figure out whats up with it.

went back and rechecked everything, and more popping noises occured, almost sounded like popcorn. Then i realized that the IDI Cover wasnt level on both sides when installed (ie not even each way), and when i would try and level it, the popping got more prominent. I ended up taping the boot retainers (the plastic part that has the clips) to the Coil, then saw how much harder the boots were to get onto the plug. After getting it all lined up, i started the 4 bolts on, turned the car on, and tightened them all down evenly, and then it seemed like a light turned on, and the car sounded so much better at idle, so i tighten them to the recommended 16ft lbs, and done deal, so much for something so simple. It seemed as if the boot wasnt level or wasnt seated properly somewhere in the mix, and not allowing the spring to seat very well between the coil and plug.

Did you use a torque wrench to put them in? Torque spec is right on the head...

Changed mine about 2 weeks ago for a loss of power...the cermaic of 2 of the plugs was cracked...

Changed them out and she purrs once again.

As forseating the IDI cover, it takes a bit to get it right--my first time changing the plugs it took forever, this time, got it on the first try.

What you might want to do is pop the springs out of the boots and stretch them out--that will make sure that there is no air gap. Make sure they are about an inch long. and that should work fine.

It was the plugs, they were tight when i first put them in, didnt use a torque wrench, but till they were tight, as one would do in any car (changed them atleast twice in my sunbird, so im familiar with changing plugs) but it seemed that they somehow got backed out, maybe from trying to get the boots off, dunno, but shes just a purring now..
