I think it is so when you slam your trunk, the air pressure from the lid closing has a place to go, so the lid will shut smoothly. I know it rattles like HELL with subs.

the sand most likely came from else where , inside the trunk

but that is a cross ventalation vent , if the car was a perfect seal , none of the doors or the trunk would close , plus youd run out of air going down the road , and the heating and a/c wouldnt work right

In the trunk. On the passenger side, under the carpet. Anyone know a way to seal it up so it doesn't rattle?

yea i got to the beach all the time. put that is under the carpet like i had to pull the carpet away from the sides and that was all under it the sand from the beach goes where the spare tire is or just stays on the carpet. that vent thing in on the side of my car near the gas tank if i stick my hand in it i can hit the bumber.

There is a small plastic flap on that vent, The flap should close to keep water dust sand etc. out but both the one on my 2000 Cav, and my 2004 SF.let dust and gravel collect in the area around the vent.plus mine also rattled with the bass way up.I took them out and cut a sheet metal plate out to fit over the hole.I cut a 1.5 " hole into the plate I made . Then epoxied a ABS one way vent I found in the plumbing section of Rona.No more dust water and the trunk and doors close no problem. And I can turn the bass up with out any rattles.

YOU seal it, when you close your doors your ears will have that pop feeling.

the sand filters throug the carpet

best i can tell you is to pull it , and dyno mat

or to use some of the black stuff the use on the windows to seal the part around the body

I get sand and lose gravel in my trunk from that vent. I RTVed the hell out of it. It is sealed 100%, and has been that way for a while now. I have no heating, cooling, or defrost problems. If I slam my door then, yes, it sometimes makes my ears pop. If I close them normally then I have no problem. I never have ran out of air either driving down the road. I do not believe any of our cars are sealed enough that removing or sealing that vent hole will make a difference. It has never on mine. Also my trunk floor now also stays dry.

I have the same problem with my trunk.. I get sand in there and water i'm sure at times when it rains. best thing to do is just put an old shirt over it. that way nothing gets dirty and if water gets in it gets soaked up. and the car can still let air pressure out.

And it's cheaper too.
