Currently I'm in the middle of replacing the water pump on my
1998 cavy 2.2 manual. I have the S-belt off, the alternator removed, the water pump pulley off, and the old water pump off. My questions are as follows:
- Is the alternator supposed to be that hard to pull off of the engine after the bolts are off?
- I have 3 different length bolts for the alternator... the longest one is on the bottom, but I didn't pay attention to the location of the other ones... which one's which?
- Are the alternator bolts supposed to be torqued to a particular setting or just really tight?
- How could I tell if the old water pump has actually gone bad or if it was just the gasket?
- What is the best way to clean the mating surface of the old gasket? Is sandpaper a bad idea?
- Was $20 too little to pay for a new water pump? I've heard astonished gasps from others.
- What is the order of replacement for the water pump? (pump) (gasket) (sealer)? (pump) (sealer) (gasket)? etc...
- How much wood COULD a woodchuck chuck? Supposing, of course, that a woodchuck could actually chuck wood...
Much thanks for all replies!

Drain your coolant overflow tank and you will have direct access to the back bolts on the W/P.

Well, I already have my alt. out. My old water pump is also removed. My questions pertain to my situation after removal. I wish I had known of your way about 10 hours ago

I will remember it for the next time I replace my water pump, which I hope is never.
But seriously, thanks for the tip.

I wouldn't use sandpaper to clean the surface. depending on how hard it is to remove the old gasket sealer, I use either a small paint scraper or a razor blade (but be careful not to scratch the metal. Once you removed the old material use some Brake Klean or rubbing alcohol to clean the surface. Apply your gasket sealer, gasket,(I apply the gasket sealer to both sides of the gasket) and then place it on the water pump, then install the water pump and tighten the bolts. Make sure its tight, but you don't need to get out the torque wrench.
Some times different types of metals stick together if they have been together for a while. Ever try removing an aluminum rim from a rear drum that hasn't come off in a few years.
Generally when water pumps start to leak, they are bad. I'm sure when you go to install your alternator, you will be able to figure out what bolts go where. hope that helps

$20 bucks isn't too little. I paid $26 for mine new.
As for the bolts on the alternator, the longest one goes on the bottom, the middle sized bolts goes on top, and the smallest one is the one in the rear.
