I drive a 97 2.2 3 Speed Automatic Cavalier. Last night I was at Brook's Pharmacy, got in my car and put it in reverse and it didn't go anywhere, it didn't go forward as if it was in neutral, but it didn't back up either. When you press the gas it would just rev as if it was in neutral. There is no grinding noise, or anything like that. I think maybe a solenoid or something broke, or a cable. Anyone know of something in particular I should look for?
I also found out, that when the transmission is in Neutral it drives forward as if it was in drive. So Reverse doesn't work, and Neutral isn't neutral anymore, all the other gears are fine.......for now
sounds like cables. its not engageing the right gear. i could be wrong though

If it doesnt go in one gear it is quite likely you blew a transmission drum.

hmmm, what is the best way to fix such a problem?
First thing is to drop that pan a see if you have chunks of hydralic clutch at the bottom.

The forward clutch could be burned, welded, how does the fluid smell?
I was under the impression that automatic transmission cars had no clutch.....I could be wrong
The Automatic clutch is called the "torque converter".

New Picture comming this summer.
i'd say its your shift linkage, and besides torque converter it could also be called a stall.
