Going on Long Trip, Bad for car?
Wednesday, July 20, 2005 9:24 AM
Hi, I'm planning a long drive from VA to Indianapolis to pick up some bumpers. I plan to drive my Cav 10 hours each day in July heat, making stops only for fuel.

Is this bad for the engine? Should I plan more stops to allow it to cool somewhat?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Steve

It shouldn't be! As long as everything is mechanically sound with your car, long trips will not hurt it at all. City driving is worse. Just change your oil before or after the trip and you will be fine. I make a run from NC to Indy about 3-4 times a year to visit family. I leave at 6 am and get there about 4pm, and I only stop a few times for gas. I haven't noticed any bad effects.

It will be fine...... I drove to Florida from Toronto in June, 22 hours one way with stops for gas only (it took only 3 gas tanks) and when I came back I did over 6000kms. Changed the oil and it looked brand new! It will cool fine when you're on the highway. If you keep it around 55-60 mph then you're going to get some crazy gas milage.

Here is how my car looked on the 22 hour trip. If anyone saw me on I75 I hope you waived!

Yes... it says j-body.org on the tape

Hell yeah - what kind of tape is that?

I was thinking of taping the front of my baby as well.

Thanks for the info, guys

That's frigging awesome...lol....I can't believe you taped the whole front bumper off.

Neways it is a good Idea knowing you won't get any rock chips.

When I first saw that pic I thought your front bumper was primered or something lol

Thats actually a pretty good idea though, rock chips and road debris can really do some damage to the paint. Personally I would have used red tape though, just so it kind of matches the paint

I had a lot of people clapping , waiving, and giving the thumbs up along the way.

It's the 3M Low Tack Painters Tape. Not ony does it protect somewhat from the rocks, although some managed to break through the tape, it also keeps all the bugs off your bumper. When I got to Tampa, I just peeled it all right off, with the army of squished bugs on the bumper. Once those bugs dry on the paint it's hard to get them off! They also manage to stain the paint sometimes.

If anyone is planning to do this I would suggest to start at the top of the bumper and move down. This way the tape overlaps the correct way so the wind on the highway doesn't start blowing it off.

Thanks to BaggedCav98 for the idea!

Actually it is better for the car highway driving than city driving.

Anyways no need to stop to let it cool down. I have driven my car to

St. Louis, MO 8 hours only stopped once
Minneapolis, MI 12 hours only stopped 3 times twice for gas
New York City, NY drove got gas, drove longer, stopped like 15 minutes, then got gas and finished it out 11 hours
Also drove from Washington DC to home 12 hours only stopped for gas

Anyways car never missed a beat and always ran great

Driving them is better than letting them set, trust me I know, I let mine set all winter and only drove it maybe 4 or 5 times in the spring due to the weather, then I took off to a meet back in june, that was about 2hrs from my house and my belt shredded due to massive dry rot, from not being driven..

As long as it's not overheating let it be. Stopping to let it cool would be pointless, it would take a long timeto cool, and be back in operating range in a couple minutes after you set off again. I also beleive that it's better for it to stay the same temp rather than hot cool hot cool. Finnaly why do you think people advertise highway miles when they sell a used car? It's far better than stop and go.
