I've got a 96 sunfire with a 2.2l auto, and the car will start up with a little shot of starting fluid, but wont run. I tried listening for my fuel pump to prime when I turned the key, and I don't hear that, but a clicking sound. I think the sound is coming from the intake/throttle, not sure. Anyone got any info for me, I'd appreciate it.
Check the fule rail. There should be a test valve with a cap on it. It will look like a tire valve when you take the cap off. If you press it in with a screw driver, gas should spray out. Be very careful not to start a fire.
There should be a test wire for the fuel pump. On the older j-bodies, it a wire with an end on it that dose not connect to any thing. It is yellow or orange if I remeber correctly. If you send 12v+ down this line, it will run the fuel pump. This should prime the system.
Newer models may have the fuel pump test wire in the fuse box under the hood. I haven't looked, so I'm not positive. It will be marked in the box something like fuel pump test.
If there is no gas in the fuel rail after primeing the system, then your fuel pump is dead. Else its an injector/ECM problem.
Since I'm able to spray the starting fluid in the TB and it starts the engine, wouldn't that be a sign that my injectors are clean, or should I still consider them? I was upon the assumption that my fuel pump was the only problem, but assuming things makes an ASS out of U and ME.
starting fluid evaporites and can let the engine run for a short period. If you use a slow constant spray to keap the engine running. It is defiently a fuel problem.
I would check you fuel pump first. But if there is a problem with the injectors. Like say a bad ground, then you will still not get any fuel into the engine and it would not run.
