clanking

Buddy of mine just called, said he just bought a 96 cavalier 2.2 automatic for $200. Says when you start it up it has a loud clanking noise. Said he is sure its not knocking. He hasnt gotten it back to his house yet but was asking me what I thought it might be just by his description.

As soon as he said clanking, the first thing I thought of was the torque converter bolts, or a cracked flywheel. Broken rocker arm also came to mind but that wouldnt be as loud, right? But, the girl he got it from supposedly says it it feels like its lost power. Ill be going and looking at it in a week or 2, but until then based on what you just read, where would you start first?

Thanks for reading all of that^

I know the timing chain will make a lot of noise when the tensioner goes bad. If you hear a noise coming by the passenger side wheel that speeds up with rpms (and eventually quits with a high enough rpm) then that could be it. Otherwise, it could be a rod or something.
