my front suspension just started squeaking when i hit bumps. It doesnt do it all the time, only after i just drive down a really bumpy road, but when it does squeak it feels like i have no suspension at all. Are my struts bad? And how much do they usually run to get replaced?

My 87 z24 squeaked as well. It was 12 years old before I sold it.
try put a little oil in the rubber part on top of to strut mount where the nut holds the strut rod.
i did that to mine and that same noise as your's went away.
if it comes back do it more time inside the rubber part then try turn the steering left right.
if it is not that then other problem could be blown sturt.
i hope if that oil helps why mine did it then put oil in the rubber part few time then drove it went over bumps and it not came back that noise.
The squeaky noise I heard with my strut mounts was similar to a grinding squeak, almost as if metal was being rubbed or scraped together too.
It only did this when the car was moving.
If it does it standing still when you turn the wheel left and right, usually it's a sign of a bad ball joint.
Good luck getting it fixed, and nice 1/4 time.
I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.
Seems like this post is pretty old but I just got my car back form the shop for the 5th time for the same problem. They have done everything but replae the strut and the noise is driving me crazy. It is really bad when I am going about 10 MPH, but no noise at higher speeds. Anyone have any other suggestions besides the oil or replaceing the struts? And what kind of oil is best for lubeing the struts, cause I have never done it before. Thanks for any input.
Try the front sway bar bushings. I had the same squeak going over bumps for a long time. Didn't know what it was. I read a response here to try the bushings. I ordered them from GMpartsdirect.com and had them replaced. Squeak gone. Car handles just like brand new. Try the front sway bar bushings.
