rough idle on a 99 2.4
Friday, June 03, 2005 9:33 PM
i recently chaned my oil and spark plugs recently now i have a rough idle. at every time im at a red light it idles at around 800 RPM then drops to 500 RPM for like a second. and the lights dim too.
the plugs i am using are the NGK Iridium TR7 due to i am running nitrous.
i was thinkig the feul filter, but i had that chaged last month.
the thought of the IAT senor or maybe a bad 02 sensor, but no codes are coming up.
i was also thinking that one of the spark springs got damaged when i changed my plugs.

any more ideas?

It might sound elementry, but since it was hot today in our area, the A/C might be kicking on and off, which can change idle.
A low charge of refrigarent with the A/C on will cause that situation.
You can try to eliminate the above by simply making sure the system is off.
Hope this helps, but it could be any number of things.
Best of luck to ya.

I have NO a/c and my is doing this I have a 99 LD9. I have changed the plugs, boots, fuel filter. Mine is fine after a little throttle. I am thinking it is the coil pack, but not sure.

Try running some injector cleaner through it, ive had similar issues of late could just be the weather change also check for vaccum leaks. Might want to run some seafoam though it too

I like the idea of vaccuum leaks, however, a bad coil pack would cause a constant miss.
It looks like one of those things thats hard to find without a scanner, any codes?

Nah, its those Iridium plugs....2.4's don't like them at all. Try Bosch Platinum or AC Delco...

MD-Z24, I wouldn't say that all Cavs hate Bosch. I've been running the +4 for over 5 years now in my 98 Z24 with no problems.

99RedZ24 I agree with the checking for vacuum leaks. Mine had one just last week. Very small hose right at the front of the TB. Replaced it and now all fine.

Gary, my car just ran like @!#$, with +4's. Both sets i had in there. It runs 1000 times better with my Platum AC delco ones in.

^^^ I must agree, when in school, I was tought to put what belongs, and the AC is what belongs.
I'm not saying yeah or nay about them (the other brands), but you can't screw up using the stockers.
If your J is stock, run stock, if you have extensive mods, then that is a whole new ballgame, and people have different opinions on that subject.
Based on that 'lil theory, if you have just a couple of bolt ons, run the Delcos, If you have more than that, you prolly know more than I do.

MD-Z24 I guess I am one of the fortunate few who hasn't had problems using the Bosch +4. I see you have done quite a few mods to your Z. That could be one of the reasons that they didn't do well for you. I hope you sent them back to Bosch and got a refund. They will refund your money if you are not satisfied. But, we get off the topic that 99redZ24 started. For his problem, I say start with the simple stuff and look for a vacuum leak.
